Dougy
Out last night after a request from a gamekeeper to sort out a pheasant killer around his pens I was parked up in the middle of a stubble field, 150yds to front and behind and about 130 to my left and right, so pretty central, all set up using thermal as a spotter. No Fox showed at all 3 Badgers, a few rabbit's, then something caught my eye to my right, slinking along the bottom of the hedge, a small ditch around 9 inches at it's deepest bottom and central. Not coming out of the hedge bottom for around 75yds, and then when it did eventually come to the open gate way, it was just below line of sight, but still it didn't hang about. No chance for a shot, all though its clearly visible using thermal, once you swap to NV and IR it was obscured by grasses, twigs etc, and at times just seemed to have vanished only to appear again when using thermal. Just sneaked 2 tins of cheap cat food on Mrs dougy, s shopping list, that will go near the gate way on my arrival tonight, (obviously not in the tin). JDog
If you leave it in the tin the mink will spend more time trying to open it giving you a longer time period to get it in the sights and shoot it. Leave one of the old fashioned openers just in case it cannot open it with the modern ring pull thingy. Ok I will try that tonight Just a thought though, would it matter if its a left hand or right handed tin opener, just a thought, I dont want to waist a night out. powler
I would try leaving a chisel and hammer instead of a tin opener that way when he starts chiseling the noise will let you know he is there.
Farma Geddon
Jackhammer would be noisier but too fast perhaps
tx4cabbie
Leave a Swiss army knife next to the tin, by the time he works out which blade is the tin opener, you could stalk closer
Dougy
Thanks for the advice gents, its certainly given me something to think about, but did I really ask for advice on how to open a tin of cat food No ! If i was unsure how to open a tin i would have got the Mrs to get a bag of "Felix" then the Mink could have nibbled through the packet
malantone
Keep us updated on how you get on, shooting mink that is.
CharlieT
I'd be tempted to get a No 6 Fenn trap down.
Dougy
Traps are down as from this morning, after call to the keeper. But a 55 grain pill at 3800 fps will do if all goes to plan, and it stops raining,. I will try and catch it on thermal if it shows.
WelshMike
Good luck Dougy. I think a trap is the way to go as the mink the other guys have encountered seem fairly unique of they can use tin openers or jack hammers
spinach
Looking like a plan . Oh and don't leave the Swiss Army knife as once they've opened it they may come after you and remove either your kidneys or a stone from your horses hoof! John. reggiegun
Dougy mate, a couple of pictures, one of me with mink shot in river bank at 10 yards with 223 and one Alix shot with shot gun. Both old pictures lol
Dougy
Been out and no sign, unsure if they are habitual like fox's. But not given up on that one yet. Ended up with a big dog fox though so a result. UD 152 yds. unlucky fox another 20 or so yards it certainly would have winded me.
