Graylag 8 bore

Ralph Grants were the first in this field, importing modified Kestrel 10s which sold for (I think) £500. They also imported single 4 bores at about £1000. Elderkins then followed suit with the Greylag.

Some "full size" 8 bores were imported in small numbers at about that era. They were great clunking things with small hammers which looked as though they belonged on a 12.

There is nothing wrong with a "small" 8 used sensibly and you can buy appropriately sized wads from such as Graham Deakin.

To pass proof (simplistically to prevent them blowing up!) the borer could not take enough metal out of the 10 (.775) bore barrel to make them true 8 (.835) bore! so they came out very tight in the bore (.815/.817).....add this to the choke constriction (? thou) and it is not difficult to see the potential problem of firing an .835 (or larger?) wad up it!

Some Gualandi 8 bore plastic Wads measure .846 which yet again increases potential for damage to the barrels!

The other downside is because they are ten bore weight guns with internal bore/chamber metal removed........they are very light for an 8 bore consequently they kick like the proverbial mule!

As others have said......if you load shells with the appropriate diameter wads, they should be fine and kill geese very well!

Seems surprising that a plastic wad can do any damage to a barrel .

Perhaps someone will enlighten us.

All I know is that most, fibre or paper based wads come in a wide range of sizes per gauge but I have never seen anything said about in data!

I mean even 12g can range from .718"-.729"bore!

I shoot 10g wads in my .750" Bess and no damage!
