Fishing Richie
I have recently purchased a new Browning 525(2015) model with adjustable stock. The Browning Catalogue states that it has an ‘’oil finish’’. My question is what is the best treatment for this as it looks nice and I wish to keep it that way. I have searched many of the threads on here and ‘’Trade Secrets’’ seems to be the stock oil of choice but having investigated the product their seems several different stages of application ie.Grain Sealer, Alkanet Oil, Rapid Oil, TS-95 I do not wish to strip what system has been used out of the factory just maintain / enhance it. Any advise would be welcome even if its ‘’do nothing’’. Thanks Rich
johnphilip
i think the oil you are talking about is for starting out with a stock.that has not been treated. you say it has been oiled from new, so all you need to do is keep feeding the wood . i use CLENZOIL. i use it on the stock and the barrel . just use two cloths, one for the barrels and one for the woodwork. Westward
I find Clenzoil a very good cleaner/solvent but as it contains mineral oil I keep it away from oiled wood. Prolonged absorption of petroleum based mineral oil will eventually break down the structure of wood leaving it softer and weaker. Proprietory branded stock oils are mostly linseed oil with some 'secret' ingredients. You can make your own lifetime supply by buying some linseed oil and a bottle of terebene drier (Ebay) to speed up the drying. Mixing instructions are on the bottle. browning123
Trade Secret Rapid Oil can be used on its own to condition the stock.......a couple of drops rubbed in after the gun has been used.
Fishing Richie
Thanks for all the replies. I will have a look for some CCL conditioning oil when I am next in the gun shop. Rich
welshwarrior
Just use the rapid oil or any other good stock oil to build up the finish to a decent level/finish most factory finishs are quiet thin and need a few more coats. Then maintain with a good beeswax adding more stock oil if the finish start looking worn or thin.
