buze
I'm a newb, started shooting about 6 months ago. I've been shooting with a trap gun so far (full and 3/4), and I'm getting quite used to it, and I certainly seems to be quite successful breaking clays... I can shoot doubles quite confidently etc. On saturday I tried a 'sporting' gun, and failed to hit /anything/ -- I reverted to the trap, and was hitting pretty much everything again.. So question is, should I try to 'fix' myself, or is it OK to continue shooting a trap gun for anything (even game?) So far I like the trap as I can put the clay 'well above' the rib -- with the sporting I kept shooting underneath, and I felt I'd have to 'hide' the clay before shooting to get a hit... Or is it just bad gun fit?
TIGHTCHOKE
Trap guns are designed to shoot above the point of aim and you have got used to that. If using a sporting model it will be different. This is still subject to either gun fitting you.
HDAV
There is a reason you lots of "sporterised" trap guns...... If the gun works don't worry about it you might want to consider opening the chokes out a bit if your shooting mostly sporting and game targets, 1/2 and 1/2 will be fine for pretty much anything your likely to see, unless you suddenly take up skeet don't worry about the label and just shoot,
FreeShot
OK to continue shooting a trap gun for anything (even game) This - don't worry about chokes - there are some fine cartridges out there that will make up for broader patterns Edited January 31, 2016 by FreeShot
Scully
If you shoot well with it then it doesn't matter what configuration it is set up for. My nephew shoots Sporting with a 101 8500 Trap gun choked at full and extra full. He thinks it's the dogs danglies.

Gordon R
Broadly speaking, trap guns have a higher comb than a sporter. One man's trap gun may be a sporter to someone else or vice versa.
bostonmick
it makes little difference what model it is,if you know your gun you will shoot ok.the same rule applies to all in shooting put the lead in the right place.
PhilR
You're right Gordon most shooters who pick up my trap gun usually say 'I could shoot sporting with this' and are surprised when they see how my high my eye is over the rib. The drop front and rear is 38 and 48mm. Whenever I pick up a sporter the sight picture I have is very similar to my trap gun. I'm going through the grief of sorting out my new sporter stock at the moment. When I shot it straight out of the box on a pattern plate several times it was printing the pattern near as dammit the same height as my trap gun. If fact I've shot some OT with it with some tighter chokes and shoot it as well as my trap gun. Edited January 31, 2016 by PhilR
brett1985
i use an MK38 trap gun for everything. no need to use anything else if your trap gun is what your used to. maybe get the chokes opened up, or have Teague do their magic on it, if you want to shoot skeet with it though... lol
buze
Ok so that's me reassured then -- was a bit worried of picking 'bad habits' of some sort. Of course, the gun that seems to suit me like a glove is the fancy expensive one -- the sportster was 1/2 price :-)
STOTTO
Ok so that's me reassured then -- was a bit worried of picking 'bad habits' of some sort. Of course, the gun that seems to suit me like a glove is the fancy expensive one -- the sportster was 1/2 price :-) All else being equal, if you get my meaning?? A man goes to a tailor to try on a new custom-made suit. The first thing he notices is that the arms are too long. ``No problem,'' says the tailor. ``Just bend them at the elbow and hold them out in front of you. See, now it's fine.'' ``But the collar is up around my ears!'' ``It's nothing. Just hunch your back up a little... No, a little more... That's it.'' ``But I'm stepping on my cuffs!'' the man cries in desperation. ``Nu, bend you knees a little to take up the slack. There you go. Look in the mirror--the suit fits perfectly.'' So, twisted like a pretzel, the man lurches out onto the street. Reba and Florence see him go by. ``Oh, look,'' says Reba, ``that poor man!'' ``Yes,'' says Florence, ``but what a beautiful suit.''
