malmick
Hi, I'm up in Northumbria later in the year near Alnwick and I can see that Bywell's and Northumberland Sporting Clays are close. Any info on these or others, any north of Alnwick? Cheers, Mick
Gordon R
Only been to Bywell the once - never again. The most stupid people, behind a gunshop counter, I have ever met.

shaun4860
They seem to be doing quite well without your esteemed custom I thought that also, It's been undergoing a huge refurbishment over the past year or so culminating in a new clubhouse/kitchen, The sporting facilities now enable it to run multiple competitions at the same time, Last weekend it was 100 A/R (Northumberland Championship), 100 Skeet, 100 DTL, 100 ABT. Malmick, Give it a try, you won't be disappointed, Wednesdays and Saturdays are on every week where you can can shoot Skeet, DTL, Sporting, Sportrap also some weeks they also do ABT and Double Rise. Sundays they shoot alternately, If you give me or pontbeck the dates we can check for you. Do you know where you are staying? as Braidwood beside Midlem (Selkirkish) also have a great Sporting ground. Northumberland Sporting Clays are not open every week but depending on your dates I can also find that info as well
malmick
Thanks guys, particularly shaun4860 for the details. I'm up there end of July and start of August on the coast near Low Newton.
pontbeck
One of the most professionally run grounds in the country. You aren't awarded the world and European championships if you are an amateur outfit..I have a vested interest as I do some coaching there but the staff are friendly and accommodating . The gun room is huge and run by informed personnel, who are certainly not stupid. Please come, as Shaun said, you won't be disappointed. markm
I think you will struggle to beat bywell anywhere in the country, on everything but price.
fielddweller
I was up there last year and in a similar situation, but could only shoot on a certain day so went Bisley (Braidwood) it's about 90 mins drive if I remember correctly. Lovely ground with something for every one which might help you if Bywell is closed when you can go. Have fun it's a lovely part of the world Cheers Fielddweller
figgy
Been to the shop twice first time to pick up something I got online for my wife. They took nearly an hour to find it and thought they may have sold it to someone else in the shop, this was all in 48hours of ordering. Eventually found the item and all was well. Second time same again only this time they had sold it and never had it in stock when I ordered it, they spent an age looking then sheepishly confessed to having sold it. I told them it was a two hour round trip. Never again will I bother with them.

figgy
Steve smiths at Dinington. Not sure of anymore as Northumberland isn't exactly that well populated to warrant a lot of grounds.

I'm afraid that has to be one of the worst "Premier" grounds in the country, Horrible attitude from the owner towards anyone that isn't in his "clique" Reuses old clays, won't give you a scorecard as "it isn't a competition" because they are old clays you get a lot of no birds but he only gives you 25 clays per round so you have to keep going back to get more credited, All of the above is my own opinion, albeit shared by others I know. Have to disagree with you on this,i think s smiths is an ok place to shoot .i know I've been going for a few years now there's no rush to get round and as it's open 5 days per week you can go if you have days off during the week for practice

jonthebrit
Thumbs up for Bywell from me also. Me and my daughter have been going for few weeks now and it's always very friendly and helpful. If only there were more days in the weekend....
Gordon R
It might well be a great ground, but I stand by my comments about at least two of the staff, in the gun shop. I got messed about more than Figgy.

malmick
Hi, finally got back home and onto a reliable internet connection. Many thanks for your hospitality last weekend Shaun. I really enjoyed your club and I'm very impressed with what you've achieved with a private set-up. Whilst Bywell was good for turning up alone and being able to just pay and shoot I much preferred the club atmosphere on Sunday and felt part of the group straight away, a very friendly bunch of guys and easy to get on with. Please pass my thanks onto them for welcoming me and allowing me full use of the exec lounge :good: Cheers, Mick
