navara and pathfinder has issues with timing change. Upgrade to a duplex chain is approx £1000 and you might as well do the clutch and fly wheel whilst it is in bits so £1500.

I had a 2005 pathfinder SVE. Bought with 37,000 on the clock and sold with 97,000.

Servicing was every 18,000/2 yrs, but I got it done annually at about 12,000 intervals. Non service items were a full set of disks and pads when I bought it and a set of General Grabber AT2's which were still fine when I sold it after 50k miles.

Areas to watch for:

Rust either side of the boot finisher ( handle ).

AC pipe work corrosion. Get under the rear drivers wheel and locate an aluminium pipe approx 10mm. It has a rubber support on it around about the wheel arch and it causes the pipe to corrode and leak as damp gets trapped. It is apparently a body off the chassis job to replace and about £1200 !!!!

Engine cutting out when changing gear / dropping clutch approaching junctions is often a dirty maf sensor - clear with electrical contact usually sorts that.

Going into limp home mode when accelerating hard in 1st to 2nd can be linked to suction control valve - about a £120 part to replace.

Check clutch for juddering and slip on a slight slope. Slip is most noticeable in 3rd gear WOT at about 1800 revs onwards.

Jumping out of cruise control can be a sign of a cracked pedal box as it puts the sensors out of line.

Overall, really reliable. I averaged about 35 mpg and had up to 40 on a run. Fast vehicle despite the weight with 170 bhp with masses of space inside esp with the seats down.

Off road with the grabbers it was spot on too. Did plenty of lamping in mine and also took it off-roading around the Yorkshire moors and it coped admirably. Electronic 4x4 sometimes struggled to cope with really muddy conditions, but saying that I got through a rea.ly muddy patch toeing a trailer whilst a Range Rover with fancy electronics got stuck and needed towing out!!!

Would have another one without a second thought. Best car I've had. Usually change every 6 months to a year but had my pathfinder for 4 1/2 yrs!!!

Toyota landcruisers take some beating comfortable and reliable, the colorado/prado smaller versions are probably your best buy at used disco 3 money. A 4x4 i think is fantastic but they just are too heavy at 24MPG average for me are the GR lwb patrols fantastic truck if you can live with the MPG.

I have recently swapped my td5 90 for a 2.5 Hilux (2012). As a shoot bus its awesome, decent off road, refined and 35mpg. My wife who only drove the td5 as a last resort, says the Hilux is good enough to use as the family vehicle (holiday car for the two of us with a dog, boat, bikes etc). Apparently the new model Hilux is good enough to pass for an SUV. Suggested my wife looks at it to replace her CRV rather than a Disco Sport but this was not well received

Its a 2012 hl2 2.5 140bhp mk7. Its said to be fairly basic but it has electric windows, remote locking, heated mirrors, air con, power heat and a locking rear diff. To my mind not bad and with DAB i can get good reception for 5live :).

Think its the same as the one I got in February, Toyota Hilux Active, it has steel wheels as opposed to alloys. As you say fairly basic, but all those whistles an bells means more to go wrong. I seem to be getting better mileage with it than my old 55 plate L200.

Personally, i wouldt go for a Navara as even 08 models are breaking in half, seems to be a design fault in the chassis as its a big problem with them.

Last July i bought an Isuzu DMax and it has been superb, no issues at all.

Andy.
