Stratts
Hi all, Just wondering if a .410 hushpower would be suitable for 8 year old boys to use as a starter shotgun busting clays? I've been looking at getting one for quiet bunny bashing anyway but not sure if it wuold be ok for the kids? Cheers Stratts
robbiep
I wouldn't think so. Hushpowers are prettynose-heavy in the barrel. So that weight is going be be hard for a youngster to handle. Most 410s are also pretty tightly choked. Meaning that actually hitting clays with them is very hard work. Especially when you then add in the smaller load, so fewer pellets to actually strike the clay. I'd suggest a light 20 bore - O/U or even single barrel - pushing out a 21g cartridge for a youngster starting on clays.
Stonepark
Hushpower as above not suitable, look at khan or revo o/u for inexpensive 410 as lightly choked as possible or beretta (more expensive) and if you can get multichoke even better. Stick to smallest shot, no larger than 7 or 7 1/2, in 3 inch, 8 in 2 1/2 inch.
scotslad
Both the above are spot on. But just to add the lighter the gun the more the felt recoil with same size of cartridge, i'd even go lighter than 21grams with a 20 bore if u can get lighter. I shoot 21grams throu my S/S 12 when at clays. So it is a balancing act a light enough gun they can handle but won't kick to hard. Possibly at that age more important to get a gun that the stack can be adjusted as thy grow as stock/gun fit is important for shooting and felt recoil. Dunno if u could hire 1 at clay range? As i imagine ur kid will be growing pretty quick at that age
Stratts
Thanks chaps it doesn't help that I have non identical twin boys and one is smaller than the other! I can see this getting expensive!!
Stratts
Just agreed to get the Baikal .410 that's for sale on PW with a push on mod so hopefully will be the best of both worlds for them and me!! If not at least I'll be happy with a quiet bunny basher!!
Jay_Russell
I started of my shooting life as a 8 year old boy walking the hedges with my grandfather. In front of us would be jasper a 4th in line lab that my grandfather had bred and trained. I was given an old .410 poachers gun and a handful of carts. Every time I shot something I'd get another 5 carts. Bit I relevant I know but fond memories. My baikal hush power is tightly choked I also wouldn't recommend it as I learning gun
srspower
The 410 isn't suitable unless he doesn't plan on hitting anything.

Good for you, but pattern gun with your preferred cartridges at 25 yards and if required get choke opened up,no real reason to be tighter than 0.400 diameter. Terry2016
Started my boy off on a .410 when he was 8, he loved it and believe it or not was shooting some clays at good distance so much so that many other guns kept asking is that a 20g .. Just start them off on easy targets not to far out ,,, the art is for them to break a few and not get disheartned, My boy seemed to love the rabbits as you can see the shot pattern .. Good luck and enjoy i know i did .. its great fun Terry
motty
I think there is nothing wrong with starting a child off using a .410. Some posters here make it sound like it's akin to using an air rifle. It's the same with anyone learning to shoot - start off with easy targets and progress from there.
