Sha Bu Le
Anyone know if the 50p slot machines that pass for air pumps at filling stations are capable of inflating a totally flat tyre. Reason I ask is more from curiosity than anything, son's car had a slow leak, the tyre was due for replacement so he got a couple of tyres fitted. Two weeks later the same wheel that had the slow leak had developed a slow leak. Now when the old tyre came off there was no sign of a nail etc. Took the wheel with the new tyre off no sign of nails or anything else, so came to the conclusion it must be a leaky valve. Got some new valve cores and replaced the old one, then took it to a Shell garage. Fifty pence in the machine, motor running and it would not do a thing. Not the slightest sound of a pssssst, the machine in this Shell place is known to be iffy. Went to a different station and same thing. Finally got the chance to have a look at it today, everything seemed ok but replaced the valve core anyhow. Then got my very small foot pump out, a gazillion pumps later the tyre was up to pressure and my legs were kerknackerated. Any opinions esp informed ones most welcome. Just would like to know Thanks all ATB Bri

Rupert
Usually yes, they have a flat tyre button
Royboy
try taking the valve out so it lets more pressure in, if it's popped off the rim though you might struggle Edited April 10, 2016 by Royboy
Dougy
Could be a damaged rim.
Rst1990
You have to press the flat tyre button on the machine before it releases air as there is no back pressure from the tyre. The wheel may have corrosion on the inside rim that's stopping the tyre from sealing not uncommon, they normally put tyre seal on the rim (silicone based black paint) before tyre installation. Longman
When I replace tyres at work i always clean the rim with a wire brush. If the rim is badly pitted or corroded use a product called rim seal like thick tyre soap and we always put new valves in as they perish over time just like the rubber in the tyre.. jonny thomas
Is it alloy? They can sometimes become porous with age

Sha Bu Le
Thanks for your replies fellas, interesting, have learned some new things from you all. Tyre seems to be sorted will check it again in a week. It is not alloy just plain old steel. The machines up here don't have a flat tyre button, most petrol station seem to use the same make?? wymberley
Porous because of corrosion particularly in the central 'hub' area?
