And they have a Briggs and Stratton engine

Same here, being fairly local they used to sell ones that had been returned to the factory. Ours was close to half price and has been good as gold for 6 years now. Just change the oil and filter and sharpen each year

I bought a Husky (Honda soft start engine) a couple of years back and wife now cuts lawns. Always starts first time but she does sometimes have a mental block re cut height so if I've done some rough stuff and height wrong for big lawn I have to remember to adjust otherwise it's all 'Pete Tong' but I never tell her. Previous mower was Honda which lasted 23 years before deck fell part - the engine is still going strong in a kiddies motorbike!

If you have a big lawn and are not looking for the cheapest option then I would recommend a Lawnflight HWS553 Pro.

It has a big deck made of thick alloy so it won't rust. It has a blade brake so you don't have to start it every time you let go of the handle.

It's got a Honda engine that starts everytime mine looks good as new after 7 years.

The only downside is that it's heavy if you need to lift it over a fence or into the back of a truck.

Whats the budget?

Loads of very good used machines on Ebay. I would go better quality secondhand rather than cheap Chinese if budget is limited.

Friend of mine bought a Hayter secondhand off Ebay for around £150, looked terrible but ran well, been using it on a large lawn twice a week for about 7 years and still going strong.

Bought a 1970's Mountfield 7 (30"" desk) Ride on off fleabay for £170 - brilliant mower and all you have to do is sit there - electric start 7.5 hp mulching deck (even has a headlight)- become my pride and joy and the grass has never been cut so often! She's been named "Blue Cow" and the kids fight over who get's to mow the lawn.

3 or 4 years ago I was considering going from electric to petrol but wanted to try before I spent out on something that I might not get on with. I bought an old Hayter (Hobby) off "the bay" to try and have never bothered to replace it with new, it's so good. Aluminium deck, B&S engine & rear roller (essential for stripes). An annual oil & spark plug change & Robert's your mother's brother, perfection. My only minor gripe is that the grass collection box is a little small but newer models have cured that, all I've got to do is wait for this one to die. I could be a long time waiting!
