DaNjamin2
Iv just had my meeting with the firearms officer(sgc grant) and I'm now waiting for my certificate to come through. I'm now really excited to get down the shops with my £800 budget and have a look for my first shotgun. My problem is that I'm new to shotguns and am worried about getting a bad deal and I don't know anyone with more experience to come with me to give me advice. So can anyone offer any advice as to what I should be looking for when buying a second hand gun and are there any major alarm bells that a relatively new shooter like me would miss? Cheers Ben
wymberley
If you give your location you might just find that there's someone here who would be happy to go with you.

dougall
OP, I dont know your area, some folk will be along shortly...but between decent gunshop and clay ground you should get sensible assistance.Buy 2nd hand most guns built o last a life time and unless abused badly(and you will know).personlly would suggest DONT buy one yet,try a few at clay ground see which you like feel of then look to pick one up 2nd hand. B725
Have a look in JF Nevilles in Alfreton not that far from you they have a range of guns to suit and are nice to deal with.
Gordon R
Another vote for J. Neville at Alfreton. One of the best I have ever dealt with.

If you can get Mick to bring a few up for you to try I`ll look over them with you and try and give you some advice. I`m sure the other lads will chip in too. DaNjamin2
Cheers. I will have to give them a visit. Is that the shop just off the main road through Alfreton? Are there any things to look out for when buying a used gun that a new shooter won't know about?
DaNjamin2
Thanks Neil! I think il take you up on that offer. All being well I should be popping up for a shoot at sycamore this Sunday. Ask Mick to bring you 3 or 4 to try, you can have a few shots with each and see what feels comfortable and we can look and see what condition they`re in. John at Hardys on Ecclesall Road is a good bloke. Yeah John is a nice guy, knows his stuff too. Not the cheapest shop in Sheffield but good advice to be had there. kent
It's not hard to give a break action shotgun a pretty good health check. YouTube need a properly competent friend or buy from a very honest dealer Deffo second hand you get lots more for your cash I have always thought it good to buy a cheap but sound gun as your first By the time you can use it you will know enough to buy really well and keep thar second gun a very long time
DaNjamin2
Cheers guys. Iv shot a few different guns now and I'm still no wiser as to what I want in a gun so I agree that getting something a bit cheaper till I have a bit of experience behind me might be a good idea. Alycidon
Well used Miroku should fit the bill. Perhaps a 700 or 800 model. I used to have a 700 years ago, other than a manual safe it was a nice gun. A couple on Guntrader stand out. https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Miroku_Shotgun_800-HSW_For-Sale_160413135540001 A shade on the heavy side and not a lot of choke which can be good for a novice, ie bigger patterns !!. https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Miroku_Shotgun_6000_For-Sale_160414111543390 Nice all round gun. https://www.guntrader.uk/Guns-For-Sale/Miroku_Shotgun_3700_For-Sale_160401155246711 An older gun but looks none the worse for that.
