JDog
Agaman it appears has been missing my sardonic humour for the last couple of months so he asked me to join him yesterday to stare into the sky looking for pigeons. He is a very thorough chap when it comes to decoying opportunities and even before we got to the field of 3'' high peas he could tell me how many pigeons we would see, where they would be in the field and where the flight lines would be coming from. This is a much more methodical approach than my hit and miss efforts. The wind was stronger than forecast and ideal for decoying. The lone tree in a large field was the obvious choice of hide position and we set up two separate hides under the tree. I set out a dozen dead birds on sticks and Agaman put the rotary out between the two groups of decoys. Whilst my companion was still fiddling about in his hide pigeons came straight in and I missed four in a row. Not very convincing. Pigeons decoyed well but not in great numbers and we did well to shoot thirty birds during our session. My gun and cartridge combination needs some major reassessing. Agaman's new gun and cartridges worked much better. The flight line we were depending on for our pigeons was quiet during our spell in the field and only really opened up as we were loading up the cars to go home. How typical. carl jones
Well done to both of you. Have you tried a semi auto yet? A400 with kick off !
fenboy
I think 30 is a decent effort , were you using the 21 gram cartridges ?
JDog
Yes 21 gram cartridges. The semi auto option is looking pretty likely.
aga man
It was a great afternoon and more of a catch up and chance to test JDog's new shells and me to try my new gun. I was undecided about the 21gm shells as although the start was hit and miss, towards the end Jdog seemed to find his feet with the new shells and killed a few 30+ yarders dead in the air. What was interesing i breasted out 8 of the birds last night and only 2 birds had single pellet wounds to the breast meat? As for my new gun, i seem to shoot ok with it but it is perhaps overkill for decoying. It is a fixed choke trap gun with 3/4 and full and using 28gm 7 shot gamebore's a couple of the birds i killed were demolished and not fit to eat. pigeon controller
Sounds like a good day out and thirty is a good number this time of the year. Aga Man you will have to get use to your new gun, DB shoots a 3/4 and Full and tends a to shoot more distance birds than I do with 1/4 and Half. JDog just thinking outside of the box have you looked at a recall suppression system to allow you to shoot your normal shells but less hurt. Westley
Yes 21 gram cartridges. The semi auto option is looking pretty likely. Is there no chance that you can borrow an auto and give it a few trials ? A shame you are so far away, I have an auto just lying in my cabinet, that needs an airing. You are welcome to try that. Shame you're not closer JDog, I have a Urika Light that weighs 6 1/2 lbs and cycles those 21gram Comp X. You could have given it a go. fenboy
Yes 21 gram cartridges. The semi auto option is looking pretty likely. But did they benefit your neck ? If they did then I would stick with them but perhaps consider a gun with more choke ( I know yours is fixed ) less pellets in the load is going to mean a more sparse pattern at range so more choke will help with that . I know you are not a clay shooter but if you would like to try a gun similar to yours with more choke and your 21gram cartridges and indeed a semi auto too then you are welcome to try mine down the local clay ground , dusting a few clays may well give you the confidence needed in the new cartridges. marsh man
Just been reading Mottys post , Top Mixed bag Day , and the opening line was ( Good bags have been fairly easy to come by in recent weeks ) , that might be for him and his shooting companions but for the majority of the rest of us I am afraid it have been , and still is a completely different story as far as good bags have been fairly easy to come by . I have got a fair idea of where to look , when to look and to what to look on plus having the time to look, and on top of that I have got access to several 1000 acres , and apart from a few dribs and dabs over the last few weeks the famine continue. So Mr JDog and aga man we know 30 or so is not what some people would call a big day but in these lean times we would welcome it with open arms. P S........ I hope you soon find a solution to your neck , gun and cartridge problem .
browning123
I use a Beretta 12g A400 light without the kick off system. I am also advancing in years but love shooting this gun - light weight, lovely balance, cycles any cartridge without recoil. Quarter choke is used for my pigeon decoying.
