This is the tin of stain that I found in my garage, it has been well used but we are on a budget after all.

This is my outside workshop with all the technical tools, screwdriver, sandpaper and mug of coffee with the dog supervising.

I am quite pleased with the colour at least it seems better to me anyway.

Dont get me wrong its not perfect but its not cost me an arm and a leg either.

love this :good::good::good: what are you going to do with the metal...polish some leave other bits...............great stuff

watched a programme many years ago ...it was an american gunmaker, making new plainsman and kentucky rifles....he used to bring out the "none existant grain" in plain wood by chucking alcohol on it and setting fire to it in a controlled way...........

when i stained mine ...it was stripped ...washed and left by the woodburner to dry out for a couple of days......then when it was still warm i cut back some non-water based stain with thinners and washed it on ....did this several times.............i find the water based stain is not as good as the other stuff...and i mixed the colours ....just get a dark base to it and when you have that then you can get the final colour on the top.............

Because it was done on a budget I scrounged some of this http://www.screwfix.com/p/nitromors-all-purpose-paint-varnish-remover-4ltr/48440?kpid=48440&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&cm_mmc=Google-_-Shopping%20-%20Decorating-_-Shopping%20-%20Decorating_6388cbc7-cd68-4c37-b925-385c38311f9b&gclid=CjwKEAjwm8-6BRDgnb-Dk96UmRASJADbMycY0 -rlu3lvRt3rmywh4Xjl8h73UJ4ALxQa1SEEPK3gwBoCO5Pw_wcB

Nitro mors off my neighbour he also lent me a steel tray to do it in.

So this stripped the varnish off.

Then I gave it a good rub down with some sand paper.

Wet it in water a time or two then let it dry and rubbed it down again, did this twice.

Let it fully dry for two days at the side of the fire, been freezing here last week.

Then painted the stain on with a paint brush (big mistake)

When it had dried and the brush marks stood out like a sore thumb, I rubbed it down yet again with sand paper, a good rub!!

Then I rubbed the stain in with a rag (what I should have done in the first place)

Did that two or three times

Job sorted. :good:
