harrycatcat1
The wood started off looking like the wood off a pine wardrobe but the gun itself is good and it only cost me 50 quid.

harrycatcat1
This is the tin of stain that I found in my garage, it has been well used but we are on a budget after all. This is my outside workshop with all the technical tools, screwdriver, sandpaper and mug of coffee with the dog supervising. A couple of coats on and hanging in the damson tree. I am quite pleased with the colour at least it seems better to me anyway. Dont get me wrong its not perfect but its not cost me an arm and a leg either. Gordon R
Don't knock it - it looks fine. So do the rest of the gun parts.

harrycatcat1
Beech can be very difficult to stain sometimes............... Yes I have read that, I had it stripped down before I realised what it was. As you can tell this was done on a shoe string but it cant look any worse than it did when I started the "journey"
ditchman
when i stained mine ...it was stripped ...washed and left by the woodburner to dry out for a couple of days......then when it was still warm i cut back some non-water based stain with thinners and washed it on ....did this several times.............i find the water based stain is not as good as the other stuff...and i mixed the colours ....just get a dark base to it and when you have that then you can get the final colour on the top............. harrycatcat1
Because it was done on a budget I scrounged some of this http://www.screwfix.com/p/nitromors-all-purpose-paint-varnish-remover-4ltr/48440?kpid=48440&cm_mmc=Google-_-Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Sales%20Tracking-_-sales%20tracking%20url&cm_mmc=Google-_-Shopping%20-%20Decorating-_-Shopping%20-%20Decorating_6388cbc7-cd68-4c37-b925-385c38311f9b&gclid=CjwKEAjwm8-6BRDgnb-Dk96UmRASJADbMycY0 -rlu3lvRt3rmywh4Xjl8h73UJ4ALxQa1SEEPK3gwBoCO5Pw_wcB Nitro mors off my neighbour he also lent me a steel tray to do it in. So this stripped the varnish off. Then I gave it a good rub down with some sand paper. Wet it in water a time or two then let it dry and rubbed it down again, did this twice. Let it fully dry for two days at the side of the fire, been freezing here last week. Then painted the stain on with a paint brush (big mistake) When it had dried and the brush marks stood out like a sore thumb, I rubbed it down yet again with sand paper, a good rub!! Then I rubbed the stain in with a rag (what I should have done in the first place) Did that two or three times Job sorted.

harrycatcat1
What did you use to strip it? Some Nitro mors in the link above that I borrowed from the neighbour Saying that it only took a spara's eyefull to do the stock and forend but my neighbour does that type of work so he had a big can. harrycatcat1
Finished pictures delayed again because I have decided to let a gunsmith put the bits back together, thought it might be best.
harrycatcat1
Still not done yet, waiting for gunsmith to put back together, he says sideplates got slightly bent when getting them off and need straightening.
