Thoughts on the fox hole? Didn't dig it as deep as I wanted, ran out of time, but some 2 year old decomposing pheasant ought to bring them in, and I've staked some dead chickens and pigeons around the edge.

Looks promising. Fingers crossed that works after all your efforts, good luck mate.

Can anyone recommend a good spotting lamp powerful enough to identify bodies as many of the powerful LED handheld torches only really do the eyes. Where we are there are a lot of deer so you can end up spending ages watching some eyes at the end of the field thinking it's a fox as you can't see the outline of the body. I'd be looking for one that clearly shows the bodies up to 400 meters at least ideally.

(They always exaggerate the beam's range on product descriptions so it would be good to know from people that actually use them!)

A handheld lamp that plugs into a 12v port is what I'm after. Not one you have to permanently attach.

Thanks in advance!

Hello AYA,

and welcome to 1987, lol. Sorry.

What your after is something like the Lightforce Blitz or Striker, I am sure you will be in luck, do a bit of trolling on the shooting forums. There's quite often a few being sold as folk have moved on to led hand held, or scope mounted.

It's doesn't look like you had a good night babbs, I'd have thought you would have stretched to a little smile at least. Edited by Dougy

I am not a fan of lamps that light up half the county and in my opinion they are not needed. In 99% of cases a foxes eye shine is distinct enough that you can tell if it is a fox or not. I have a NM 800 torch and I can pick out eye shine at 350-400 yards without an issue, certainly well enough to decide whether to call or not bother.

Gents

A member of the club has suggested having some awards for fox club members.

I think this is a cracking idea so would like suggestions (polite ones only please). For example:

Largest fox

Longest range

Best picture

Most annoying Geordie inbred...sorry Mark

Most interesting tree a roosting fox was found in. So far we have Oak and almond so look forward to see where this goes

Of course as the founder I should have the final say......:lol::lol:

I shot a dog fox just over a week ago where the farmer had been loosing lambs. All good until I got a call again yesterday saying another had gone missing overnight.

Headed out despite the full moon and got set up in the field where the problems have been happening. 2 hours later and a couple of sets of twins born and left alone (fox has been taking them when they are being born are very soon after) I decided a quick walk was called for before I decided what to do. Quick flick with the torch picked up some bright eye shine the other side of the valley. Over to the NV and could see the fox but she wasnt hanging around, took the shot at about the 220 yard mark. She ran on but I managed to get a second shot into her very shortly after. Couldnt find her as she was in some bushes so back this morning to recover her. The farmer was about checking the lambs so was very happy to see another dead fox. He also mentioned one of the other bits of ground he rents are seeing a fox during the day and it was chasing their cat up the lane the other day so looks like my plans to give the foxes a rest are on hold.
