Carts for Foxes????

Recommended Posts

this is a fascinating thread....it has everything.....good advice......smart **** comments.....high horseness.... learning possiblities.....funny posts...miss the point postings....and as said most miss the point and go off on a tangent.....I read it as I" i would like some info but I would not shoot unless I was very certain of a kill". All this about patterns, loads, oil cans etc are interesting......I find chucking a half house brick from 3 yards the best load of all.

DFB

:good:

LOL.

Bazza and DFB you need to get your ***** out on the next usual suspects shoot.

We should also book in a local "cheeky" day sometime soon - I think Bazza (the Stalker) is working Fri and Sat but maybe available Sunday.

If you are in Billericay get yourself down to Big Al's on Saturday 11.00 a.m. onwards.

:sly: Bloody foxes!!!!!!!!! I walked into the feild tonight, blew a rabbits brains thro its *** (those 45g no 5's are MESSY...didnt need to cut it to let the guts out.....) and hung it where the fox entered last night, only tonight, she decided to enter 40 yards further up the feild and cross agonisingly slowly from left to right, the disappear into the sheep feild, i waited and followed it across, to see it in the next feild past the sheep, I managed to creep to the edge of the tree line and it sniffed around for a while getting closer, then a second fox yelled at it and it ran off, he also didnt get close enough, 50 yards is the nearest I got! I kept my bunny for tomorrow.............frusty.gif

Mungler whens the next usual suspects outing? and can you teach my cat to do that? :lol:

What is an approved load for a fox, I have seen several foxes shot on game days with normal game loads. It is all very well to say you keep a couple of BB's in your pocket but how often do you get the chance to change?

Any well placed shot at a decent range will kill. Which is what shooting is all about.

:sly: 100% correct.

Also add, if you're going out looking for foxy go with a foxy load, BB's. Game shooting loads, OK but you'd need to be in well close, I have been out after rabbits with 6's and let a fox go, didn't see him for long but I reckon he was no more than 20 yards away. Conor saw me let him off. I still kick myself for it cos it probably would've done the job, but probably is good for beer, not foxes.

Flattening = good

Hurting = bad

I home load AAAs and kill em at 50 - 60 yds easily.

But thats your "homeloads", not what will fit this gun. If he uses 42gm of AAA then there will be approx 53 shot in the load and, according to good old Eley, @ 40yds the spread with full choke will be 40" .

Now get a sheet of paper and put 53 dots eaqually spaced onto it then imagine a fox sized "Boiler room" in the many gaps.

50+ gm with buffer ............now you`re talking !

If you take a mental note of the times and places you are seeing him a routine should start to emerge..

Next step is to be in that area long before he is, ie up to an hour,as you,ve spooked him a couple of times now...waiting quietly.Cartridges loaded already as he,s got fantastic hearing and a semi isn,t easy to load quietly :stupid:

If you don,t already have one ,invest in a hand call..invaluable...cos if he,s not coming your way a quick squeak should hopefully change his mind...

The saga continues...looking forward to tomorrows post which says"GOT HIM" :o

Good luck fella :good:

I used to do a lot of fox drives with a beagle pack in the good old days, in places where there was no hunt. The most popular choice was 1's or BB's.

I used BB's in a 1/4 choke and AAA's in a 3/4 choke, and only ever shot at sensible ranges, it's not clever to see a fox (or anything) drag itself away, and would rather leave it for another day.

The adrenalin when the hounds opened up was great, and I used to love following hunts on foot. These days I only shoot rouge foxes at the request of the farmers, a lot of where I shoot has no game birds.

my first fox was shot with a 6#.

it was `up close and very personal`. to say the very least. (its what my gun was loaded with at the time)

however i`d recomend 42g BB. as a minimum. or a 1# on 3/4 full choke (max range..)

as for 3" magnum cartridges, theyre just to heavy to carry more than 10 in your pockets. :good:

interesting the idea of multiple pellet strikes shoud come up as killing a fox with shock. im sure US or BASC research stated that multiple pellet strickes were nto as effective as a single strike in the vitals, and most animals did not dies of the shock. also i was under the impression when using a load with few pellets in it you should use cylinder as a tight choke deforms the shot more, which leaves a more open pattern which is not ideal for charlies

:yes: TBH, the range i shot mine at it probably wouldnt have made a difference on what carts i was using!!!! 10 yards lol!!! But I will carry some bb's in the end of my belt from now on, 3 of the farms i shoot on want em dead so now Im over the "ahhh cute foxy" syndrome, theyd bettter watch out! I have even got a use for the corpses,a mate of mine has several huge snakes and wants to try one as a foodsource!!!! :/
