Overheating 300tdi

Hi guys

I've got a discovery 300tdi in my 1989 90 with everything modified to be full factory 300 spec.

Changed the temp sender to the defender one to make it work with the defender gauge.

The problem is that whenever I drive it it gets hot so the gauge is right up in the birds between the red and the white.

I took the thermostat out with solved the problem and the gauge buarely gets into the white now so I put a new thermostat in but hadbthe same problem of overheating.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it to overheat any time a thermostat is installed?

Just I'd love to get my heaters back now haha

Have you actually checked the temperature of the coolant, ie, is it getting that hot,or is the gauge saying its hot.

I'm sure it's getting hot as you can't hold your hand over the heaters because of the heat.

The header tank is in the same place as a factory 300tdi

Is there a way of ruling the water pump out or diagnosing it without taking it out to check?

If the water pump is working you will be able to see it pumping water back into the header tank. if the tank is not see through only check this when cold with cap off.

I think my money would be on the pump. If it was really a blockage the thermostat removal shouldn't have that much effect, as the blockage would still be there whatever. I suppose it is possible to have a faulty 'stat from new though. Put the stat in a pan of water on the stove and heat it. You should be able to see it pop open as the water heats up.

I'll take a look at the header tank next time I'm outside, not using water though and there is no oil etc. In the water

JamieAt the minute it's not overheating as there's no thermostat so I'm assuming it's okay to drive?

Yes Fine,But doget it sorted,it only leads to More expense in the long run. B O L.

Yeah the thermostat is the right way up, I'm definitely trying to sort it as I really need a heater again haha.

I looked earlier and it seems to have water returning to the header tank do next step is flush the rad out

new radiator cannot flush modern aluminium radiators take radiator out and block outlet and fill with water and pour out and measure how much will be pints rather than gallon if blocked
