Michael Scotland
Hi all I just finished fitting a sweet 17 hmr scope to my savage rifle I had a bit of fun trying to fit it as the front of the scope kept touching the rifle tried all the tricks turning mounts exetra on and off a few times but finely got it with a couple of shims (a few bits of black tape) under each side . I took off a B Nickel 12x56 German scope which did the job but is two much scope for the gun.Does anyone now anything about this scope or has anyone tried the sweet 17 on their rifle I would be interested in the results. I am going out tomorrow morning to set it up it is a Xmas present from my daughter so I hope it works
andrewluke
you need higher mounts!
Michael Scotland
Yes that would work but I think it would then sit two high as it is at the moment I can slide a new fiver under it so not touching and all tight I only put two bits of black tape on back and front to keep it level could have just done front but might have bother sighting ? mick miller
Better to shim it with aluminium (think strips of coke can) as these are non compressible, unlike insulation tape.
wymberley
3rd time lucky perhaps. Do it properly and get some higher mounts.
Michael Scotland
I am going out today to try it I can see what you are saying but I had to raise it by the thickness of two bits of insolation tape to get it right and maybe going up to next size mounts would be to high ? Somebody went to a great deal of trouble to make your scope tube perfectly round and to size. Someone else then made some mounts to a similar standard to accept a scope without undue distortion of the scope tube. You've now invalidated that precision engineering and consequently what shape does that tube now take up when you finally nip the mount screws? Rewulf
I would be allowing for a bit of heat expansion tbh,you will break the scope ! You need higher mounts.
welshwarrior
Why not use a beer mat or some chewed gum? Seriously, scope mounts are critical to rifle performance. Scope mounts aren't vital to performance hope and good will holds the scope in place Oh if you'd not worked it out I'm in the do it properly camp. Michael Scotland
Hi lads thanks for all the advice I have been out for an hour setting scope I was hitting a beer mat at 100 yards while chewing the gum . Seriously the scope did what it said on the box I had cleaned the rifle so it took 7 shots to get on target and another half a dozen to hit the outside of bull it is shooting one inch groups off bags but give up as wind picking up need to zero the turret back to 100 yards and see if it works at 200 did not have a small screwdriver with me will try again tomorrow will give it a tweek and set happy days

Donegalcharlie
Sometimes you don't need the best or the biggest it's all down to the man and what he can do. Am sure you and the scope will do grand lad 👍👌

Michael Scotland
Hi lads I was out today tweaking my 17hmr scope I had ten shots at one hundred yards two groups of five one of each group touching the bull and all five in each group touching each other this was with my savage 93 and a sweet 17 hmr scope from the bay £40 and don't forget the four bits of tape which made it all possible 🙌
