rovercoupe
Just sitting down by the back window and that really bright star is out again so googled it and apparently its venus just below the moon to the right, very pretty but my little toy telescope cannot really pick anything out! herby
You wouldn't see any detail on Venus with a huge telescope
Chris Bb
Mars is also visible in that part of the sky, it's the duller one on the other side of the moon.
paul1966
the kids noticed them whilst sat in a carpark, had to get out my sky map phone app to find out that it was venus.

Me matt
I have a telescope and have dabbled in stargazing for a couple of years. I find this site helpful http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/visible-planets-tonight-mars-jupiter-venus-saturn-mercury I've also recently hooked up my iPhone and am currently experimenting with image capturing- it's tough. figgy
Commented to my wife when we came out of the supermarket that the crescent moon looked nice and that star is twice as bright as the moon.
Me matt
Commented to my wife when we came out of the supermarket that the crescent moon looked nice and that star is twice as bright as the moon. Common misconception- it's a planet 😉
lord_seagrave
The crescent has taken on a gloomy red colour here in North Beds. LS
moondoggy
Have a look at the SkyView app. Point your phone or tablet at the sky and it tells you which planet/star you are looking at. Even shows the ISS and Hubble.
figgy
I have had starwalk app for years does same thing, very good apps. Me Matt I know Venus is a Planet but anything small shiny or twinkly in the sky gets called a star. We still call Ursa Major the Big Dipper and Orions Belt the Giants Belt, never really grow out of childhood names we learn
