Dont watch much TV but been watching this on Travel Channel and enjoying it.I like watching the guy with the wife who does all the shooting.

Must admit I have the series on record link :) it's all really interesting I even like the guy who keeps referring to himself as a chick.

It's about the people who choose to live 'off the grid' on or about the arctic circle. Am thinking of getting the series myself if it's available.

If you have Sky it's on the Travel channel (249) 3 episodes Saturday night, 3 Sunday night and one on each night at 10 for the rest of the week,

Did this used to be on Discovery?.....rings a bell

:shaun:

I've watched quite a lot of episodes and found them interesting - initially - but very irritating in that the continuity is REALLY dreadful. As an example, just watch and see how often clothing and rifles/shotguns suddenly change in what is represented as one "take".

There's also the constant recapping of scenarios and information, which suggests that it was made for viewers with VERY short concentration spans.....

I also found myself having to conclude that the makers of the series had fallen into that oldest of traps - featuring "characters" in the belief that they would make viewing more compulsive. Unfortunately, some of the "characters" quickly showed their true colours, and it would be a bit too charitable to describe them as "eccentrics". "Nutters" is closer to the mark - see Sue, the self-described "fat chick" with her haphazard paranoia about being eaten by big predators......

Properly made, this series could have been excellent - an insightful, intelligent look at alternative ways of life. But it's just an another opportunity missed

:good: Very well put, like so many programs this could definitely have been much better executed but perhaps the makers see it as what it is, a niche film which is probably not going to go big with everyone so not worth spending too much thought on continuity. I actually quite enjoyed that scene when the young hunter taking pot shots at wolf suddenly changed rifles without blinking.

I enjoy the rather clever one liners they come up with from time to time, the native woman's European husband is a case in point as he seems almost stupid at times until he blows you away with a deep remark.

Life Below Zero is on its 8th episode and the other similar (and as good ) series, Yukon Men is on its 5th series.

All of the past series/episodes are available on the Internet.

There is a very real sense of what they are doing, especially the Hailstones family in LBZ, but I agree that Sue is becoming of very limited interest.

The series are not perfect, especially the continuity (the number of dogs on the dog sled can change during a sequence), but both these series do not seem to have fallen into the trap of other series, like Alaska the Last Frontier, Duck Dynasty, etc. which start off very interesting, but increasingly contain obviously contrived (by the Producers) situations, which become the same old, same old.

I am not sure the big lass is paranoid, I seem to recall that she has been attacked by a bear that broke in to the hut she lives in. Brave bear is all I can say.

yep came thru side of hut which is only sheet and gave her a good going over.

she made the mistake of sleeping with her head against the outer edge so had no chance.

sleeps the other way now with guns to hand everywhere :)

very lucky to be alive.
