Sticking ramp?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, so after advice from you guys I got my homemade shot maker dripping and not streaming my only issue now is as the shot dripps on the ramp they flatten and stick very lightly. I'm using copper grease and I've made my ramp adjustable so have tried most angles with no joy. My thoughts are too big of a distance between dripper and ramp? And the ramp could be too cold which would surprise me as water dripped on the ramp instantly sizzles off? Any advice would be much appreciated

I found ambient temperature to be important, but i have the same problem as you the copper grease does not seem to be the "be all and end all" of ramp lubrication.

My advice is get shed/garage/wherever you make your shot location up to at least room temperature and then try again. I have also found that a blow torch can instantly cure sticking lead although only temporarily.

I have bought some chalk and graphite to experiment with, I will put my findings up on here.

The ramp needs to be at 30 degre angle this weather is going to make it difficalt to make shot.i use french chalk tried copper grease with no joy.i am waiting till the end of march before i even think about making shot the weather needs to be 15 deg or above save lead skining over.

Well just made 25kg's of shot, chaked the ramp to begin with....total waste of time, shot stuck immediately and wouldn't run for more than a second or two. Stopped the drippers bit tilting the maker backwards (carefully).

Tried Graphite powder, couldn't even get the graphite powder to coat the ramp.....sat stumped for a few minutes. Got the copper grease back out, cleaned ramp applied a thick even coating of grease and let it sit 5 mins until started to turn black, only blackend at the start of the ramp nearest the pot so stuck the propane torch on the underside of the ramp until all the grease had baked on and turned dark colour. lowered the front of the maker to the correct angle, hit the rim above the drippers with a spanner and hey presto away it goes. Not one sick throughout. I take back what i said about the copper grease it IS the "be all and end all" as far as i'm concerned now. Just have to apply it correctly and get it to harden before you run the shot maker.

I recorded some video and have stuck it on youtube

Cool thanks for the tips,!any idea of what distance should be between dripper and ramp? Cheers pal

My ramp is attached to my dripper pot the height is around 15mm, i can measure tomorrow the exact height and let you know

You can still buy zeebrite from hardware shops in toothpaste type tubes. Wife used to buy it for our fire. Apparently you can't buy it anymore as Zeebrite as it's now renamed, wife just said it was twenty year ago she bought some, time flies.

What size shot were you making and any photos of the end product ?

Shot is roughly size 7 and not perfectly round (although the clays still break)

I would love to get the shot more spherical but i am still learning so i hope to perfect it sooner or later.

There is some pieces of bad shot mixed in there in that picture from the first unsuccessful run using chalk on the ramp, i got most of it out but some has escaped.

I am wondering how critical coolant height is from the ramp as my drop was maybe 3/4 of an inch, maybe this had some affect on shape.....then again maybe not

try to alter the ramp angle until the shot just about rolls down without stalling or another one catching it up more time on the ramp will give you better shot and as close as possible to the coolant to reduce impact into the fluid should help

I will try that thanks

simuk the angle looks about right but it sounds a little to high on the drop. is the shot flatish i run it about a max of 6mm or 1/4" off the coolant

I have been thinking that was the problem fruitloop, i'm amazed how very small changes can make big differences with regards to shot making. I have also read somewhere that my coolant tank (metal bucket) may not be deep enough and is allowing the shot to land still soft and therefore flatten out.

I will get there in the end and i'm enjoying the experience :)
