mick miller
Okay, this has driven me potty since I replaced the original bent aerial and decrepit LR stereo out of the landy. Maybe some of you folks have some suggestions. Oh, and my Defender is completely soundproofed so, yes, I can actually hear the stereo over the noise of the engine and whine of the transmission. • I have replaced the stereo with a Sony CD. I have replaced the old metal aerial (twice) with a bendy rubber thing, it's ****, reception is rubbish with it. • In addition to the rubbish reception it also picks up interference from the wipers, phone chargers, heater, you name it... So... 1. how do I fix this? 2. Is it, seeing as FM is going to die soon, go digital? 3. Any recommendations for a digital, bash-proof aerial? 4. How do I suppress the interference? Me matt
What you need is a helically wound areal 👍 As for interference- you can get inline filters to prevent that.
Davyo
Inline arial booster cost about £3:
mick miller
These are all great suggestions. Umm, any links? What about going digital, will these aerials work with digi receivers?
keg
DAB is patchy in the sticks and from memory i don't think the whippy types are good enough for DAB signal but i may be wrong.
Davyo
260743025573 Used one of these on a C3 that was picking up static. You can have a 5 star radio but if it's linked to a 2 star antenna then your only gona get 2 star reception Edited February 1, 2017 by Davyo
R1nut
I just put a dab radio in mine, used a digital booster box on the standard aerial so I can still get original radio!

HDAV
Crappy earth probably causing issues might need to ad an earth to the Sony (rtfm as there may be an earth tag not being hooked up to the loom) also crappy cable between antenna and head unit. HDAV
Read the f manual (For the Sony not the Landy!)
mick miller
What manual! It's one I found in the shed. I might just bite the bullet and buy a new radio (with manual). Go from there. New genuine aerial ordered, so that a start.
figgy
Some of the best antennas go on the glass.
ditchman
its a landrover....you know very well an old wire coathanger is the dogs doodas...
mick miller
They never, ever work... I bought an inline filter and a genuine Landy aerial (the pull up type). I give the aerial less than 6 months to live as I will, inevitably, forget I left it up as I clatter past trees on a field margin. In six months I'll post back for suggestions for a tree proof aerial that provides reception again (or go screen mounted).
Simon1
As already mentioned, go for best aerial setup possible. A booster will amplify the crackle as much as the wanted signal. Worst case, some stainless wire at the right length should work, and be robust. Will google it sometime.

mick miller
Crackle gone, reception miles better - although I get interference when I plug the phone charger (and phone) into the 12v socket, that suggests to me radiated interference from the 12v to USB charger, so, I'll bung a filter on that too supply too. four-wheel-drive
Ah but you can always get radio 4 on long wave.

mick miller
I think it's the switching regulator in the 12v to 5v converter, so, I'll give it a whirl and if that doesn't work I'll make something myself that I know won't introduce noise.
