Living in council property.

Recommended Posts

I live in a ground floor council flat and keep my firearms there. The council sometimes do property inspections and I'm worried that one day they're going to inquire about the gun cabinet secured to the wall and take a dim view of rifles and ammo kept on site. Although I'm not breaking any laws, it's state owned property and they could demand I don't keep weapons in their property. I did ask if I could attach a cabinet and they agreed as long as I give them proof that it's been inspected by police and is safe. Rules and opinions can always change though. In a way I don't see how it's any of their business what I keep in my safe and have been a good tenant for nearly 10 years. I'm just concerned that one day some council authority member who disproves of private gun ownership could make my life difficult. I was wondering if anyone else here is in a similar situation and has had issues keeping guns in rented property.

Stop worrying about it.

But for future reference if someone should ask the question "Can I bolt a cabinet to the wall?" get the answer in writings.

If there us no specific mention of firearms and ammo in your lease agreement don't fret it. My parents live in the same council property as I grew up in and are always putting shelves and stuff up, no difference really.

As long as you are not doing major alterations, for example knocking walls out and the likes.Mate had a spare room he converted to a shower/ bathroom as the council bathroom was tiny.He didn't inform the landlord/council.He got a massive bill when he moved out for them to return it to its original state.

Get a cheap wardrobe from the charity shop/freecycle/tip.

Make sure its wider/deeper/taller than the safe.

Kick the back off it & use it to disguise the metal cabinet.

Or make up an mdf box & paint it up.

Good idea. I will do this. Thanks for the advice.

Or you could stop worrying about a non existent problem. I've lived in council property for 20+ years had 2 inspections without any problem,

Well if all has been good for you, I shouldn't have any problems either, so I can relax a little now.
