tonker
Anybody here live on the islands. I am bringing the family up to celebrate our 40th later in the year, and have hired a cottage for the seven of us. We are only there for a week before going back to the west coast for another week. Or has anyone been there, if so has anybody got any pointers as to where we should go and what to see, as we are only there a week we could waste a lot of time doing and seeing the wrong things. Many thanks for any replies.
ab1964
Been to the Orkneys twice with the wife and our two boys - we love the place. First visit was to the main island, second visit was to Sanday. Below are some links to what's there to do. I've done them all and was not disappointed. Just walking along the coast is wonderful with lots of wild life to behold. Many Seals and perhaps a glimpse of an otter or Killer whale may be had. the water is killer blue, Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/skarabrae/ http://www.tomboftheeagles.co.uk/ http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/brodgar/ http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/vikingorkney/ http://www.orkneyjar.com/history/tombs/quoyness/index.html https://www.visitscotland.com/info/see-do/the-italian-chapel-p253741
lord_seagrave
Do be sure to pop into the distilleries I was there on a pilgrimage a year ago. Beautiful place. Beware sunburn - the constant wind certainly knocks a few degrees off the air temperature, and you might not realise you're catching the sun. big bad lindz
Too many things to see and do, but a great place to visit steeped in history both modern and very ancient. All that has been previously mentioned. The Italian Chapel is worth a visit and the Churchill barriers. If the weather is a bit nasty then there is the Piqahoy (sp) centre in Kirkwall that will keep children happy for a while. There some great little tee rooms in Kirkwall pedestrian precinct also the museums both in Kirkwall and Stromness are worth a visit. If you get into the Cathedral look out for the slightly off centre pillar supporting I think the 1st or 2nd arch through the door, Like all Cathedrals a great piece of engineering for the time it was built. Blackpowder
Fantastic place, you already have a lot of pointers at the main attractions. Hoy and the museum about Scapa Flow is a must. Fabulous trout fishing for £20.lochs are to numerous to mention. Blackpowder
Vince Green
The museum is good, if small and its free. Lots of Viking stuff which I love look on the visitor centre website for lots of places to go. Scapa Flow is interesting to me because my Dad was there during the war for a while. AVB
I had always imagined the Orkney Islands to be bleak and barren. Surprised to see it has such a rich heritage and lots to do. Must consider adding it to my bucket list.
McSpredder
I had always imagined the Orkney Islands to be bleak and barren. Have you been reading that "Bloody Orkney" poem? It's not like that nowadays, maybe never was.
JohnfromUK
I have been there (Shapinsay) wildfowling years ago. Lovely part of the world, but the weather can be seriously bad - especially the wind.
