Mini Afternoon On Pea Stubble .

After getting some of the household chores tidied up by dinner time it was time to see what was about for tomorrow on the barley , small patches of wheat and the peas, which I thought were close on being vined .

Going down the small country road where the peas are the first thing I noticed was the muddy wheel marks and the vegetation on the verges flattened , pulling up to the first small field the Pea viners were already off and possibly on the other field which is only two fields away , this other field have shot fairly well during the growing period and I could see a few pigeons already heading towards it

Stopping at the open gate I could see a couple of the support tractors cleaning the mud off the wheels and the viners had already left , watching through the binoculars I could see several pigeons the other end of the field with more joining them all the time .

Not having any gear with me , I was thinking , shall I leave it till tomorrow and risk the tractors coming on to pull it up , or whip off home and have a little go today , my mind was made up after seeing a few more drop in , living only about 10 minutes away , I should be back and set up by 3 . 30 ,

Time I got back the support tractors had gone and it was heaven to drive across the field to where I was going to decoy , drop the gear off and park the motor under a large tree a 200yds down the hedge .

Conditions wasn't ideal for decoying as the heavy cloud cover made it look very dark and pigeons were coming down the field without paying to much attention but now and again one would come in and sometimes paid the price .

This went on till I called it a day at around six with still a few pigeons coming in to be left undisturbed , when I packed up I had one pigeon which looked in a poor ole way , when my young dog went to pick it the pigeon took off , well my dog don't give up just because the pigeon is air born , off he went for a good 2 to 3 hundred yards across the field into a big wood , that's the last I see of him for a little while , or so I thought , as with in a couple I could see him coming back hell for leather with a nearly plucked pigeon but still very much alive.

So after nearly three hours shooting I picked up 33 , not big by the bags posted lately , but the first off this years stubble.

As a perk of the job, I picked half a carrier bag of fresh peas which after doing enough for tea went down very well with the pork chops and new spuds we had.

Sounds a great few hours MM, cheers for posting, they harvested some peas near me before the rain on Wednesday, but only seen gulls on the stubble, as kids we could get bin bags full of pods from the edges of harvested fields and then share them round the village!

THANKS to all above , and good luck to those who are shooting over the weekend .

When I was young lad the high light of the Summer was jumping up the back of the flat coal lorries to grab a handful of Peas that were still on the stalks that they used when they were carting the peas to Birds Eye . as I got a little older and got interested in pigeon shooting and not knowing at the time it would take up a great deal of my free time , plus a lot more in fact . the first pigeons I shot were on a cut pea field and the stalks were piled up and drying out on what looked like wooden pallets .Happy days.

These I take it were used for cattle feed in the winter , now at times, when there are a lot stalks left, I have seen the baling machine come on and bale them up possibly for the same reason ,

Ever the opportunist MM.

Your dog was determined wasn't he?

You have obviously finished tiling the bathroom.

Waste not / Want not , when the opportunity arises , I have had Onions , Broccoli , Spuds and Black Currants , strangely enough we don't grow Cauliflowers around here on a commercial basis.

Certainly was , he now sit in the hide and watch every pigeon shot , trouble is he expect a retrieve when he see one flapping about , I leave him for a few minutes and then send him out , no problem up to now , trouble is he think his main purpose in life is to retrieve what ever you send him after , in the ideal gundog training world I should be able to stop him on the whistle when he is in hot pursuit of his quarry , well as you know , dummies are not like the real thing , a dog can easily get fed up with keep retrieving dummies , but none of mine have ever got fed up with retrieving the real thing , so in one way , it was a good retrieve , and in another way it was poor training on my part , but he got a lot of praise when he got back and I would sooner have one with a lot of drive in him and not easily give up, than one that come back without really trying.

Yes , the bathroom is finally finished and I am now waiting for someone of IMPORTANCE to come and cut the ribbon .................Are you busy next week

Well done, great short session and no walking.

Yes P C it was more relaxing thinking whatever I shot I didn't have more than a few yards to carry at the end of the session .

Today I had the choice of having the last go on the nearly ripe barley , or settling for maybe a few pigeons less on one of the other two pea stubbles , looking at the shimmering barley field and how far I would had to walk I took the easy option and went on the pea stubble , no point in wearing out an already worn out body more than necessary is it.
