Dunkield
I was given the nod about a ropey looking roebuck on my patch, so I headed out at half five this morning as I thought a bit of overnight rain would bring them out, it certainly did. My fields are a mix of stubble and standing crop still which seems an ideal combination for stalking. Looking for the roe I got distracted by two muntjac milling about and one of them looked pretty chunky even from a distance. A bit like seeing a fox when you are after something else, I am always in two minds about taking these shots, but in this case took the muntjac hoping it wouldn't spook anything else that was about (and also thinking one in the hand is better etc...) I didn't even have time to deal with the muntjac when the roebuck appeared about 200 yards over my shoulder, so a quick stalk up to halve that distance and it was job done. Just a small matter of finding it in the crop and the drag back to the truck, which didn't take long luckily. So it was a glorious 12th for me, all done in under an hour

Dunkield
Yes the roe is a spiker or murder buck depending on how you call them. The muntjac had decent head but not symmetrical, possibly a low medal but as I have two strong golds mounted already I don't keep them these days. oowee
Very nice. Good to see the Munty. My perm has so much cover I don't see them in the open at this time.

Dunkield
My perm has so much cover I don't see them in the open at this time. Same here, I only saw it as it was on a tram-line, there was a smaller buck with it but I lost sight of that and then saw the roe, so a blessing in disguise. dodeer
I'd buy that muntjac head if you care to sell it
FOXHUNTER1
Did right , I always shoot what opportunity arises. It doesn't seem to effect the stalk in my opinion . I have quite a few times shot an early morning fox followed by a roebuck not long after ...
Dunkield
I'd buy that muntjac head if you care to sell it It went in a hedge, it will have been munched by now, it looked good through the scope but really wasn't all that close up. Here is the roebuck while we are at it
dodeer
Damn, ok. Looks nice to me. I have a Belgian man who collects muntjac skulls.
Dunkield
OK now I know I shall keep you in mind for any others, we do get very good muntjac on this ground. I may be back out this evening so I will have a look and see if it still there, but from experience gralloch, including head and feet, disappears very quickly. 7daysinaweek
What a cracking morning, just shows how quick you can get a result. Have never seen a munty until the other week when we were travelling through thetford, spotted what i think was two at about 2pm in the afternoon on the other side of a field next to a road, could not be 100% sure but i suspect they were? We only have very small numbers of roe around proximity of Liverpool, no other species. One can only hope numbers and species will increase. atb 7diaw
Dunkield
Thanks. Also want to shoot a big one if was ever possible. Can pay/ swap etc There was a time, not now I am afraid. There are only three of us allowed on the land these days, and the other two have to be accompanied by me. Pity as guiding others could help me out with the covering the cost of the lease You need to speak to Stealth Stalker
