White paint for decoys, UV or not?

Recommended Posts

I made some grey fleece wings for some magnet decoys a few months ago.... birds didn't like the air pro's, cut them out of an old dressing gown lol

After raiding my works store I settled on some white matt emulsion- and painted a white stripe on each wing, worked a treat. Not sure on the UV rating but they flapped real good and they drew good birds in.

Out of interest, can anyone supply a definitive extract from a book etc. that clearly shows where the suggestion that we should be using U.V. paint comes from in the first place?

I don't if there is, but we know that birds see into the UV spectrum. Whether it's more attractive or not, I've no idea!

I've always used ordinary brilliant white paint and put a new coat on every so often to keep them bright. I also always put about 50% larger coverage as well. Had birds land alongside them. I have always believed movement is the key. Used simple grey cloth shaped like a pigeon but half as big again, wings outstretched and painted accordingly. These work brilliantly in a good wind along with a bouncer.

I concur, last year we did numerous tests with spring sticks. Vs non spring sticks, the results were enlightening
