Top sport!

I have held back on my pigeon shooting of late and haven't done half as much as I usually do at harvest. Being unable to find a regular outlet for my birds has dampened my enthusiasm a fair bit.

I have however shot a couple of flightlines recently as birds feeding elsewhere have passed over the ground I shoot.

This has been perfect as although the big bags are not killed, the sport is amongst the best you can have with a shotgun in my book and whats more the farmer can see you are still making an effort to shoot a few.

I headed out with my old pal tan this afternoon and tried to find a line. Pigeon lines and behaviour has changed daily this week as stubbles are turned over and food availability changes.

At 12pm today I spotted a line of pigeons going out to feed into the distance and once again over my ground. The line was weak and could have been missed by some but despite the stiff breeze the birds were high, too high to shoot.

Undeterred we we pushed few bales together and put out a rotary and a bouncer. Directly under the line we hoped to reduce the height of the birds rather than decoy them.

For the first hour or so we really struggled, the birds height gave them a good view of the hide. With the wind behind them we simply could not touch them other than the odd lucky shot.

I headed off after a while and tried to intercept pigeons elsewhere.

At 3pm the return line started and although it only lasted 2 hours, the sport was first class, birds presented themselves any where from 20 to 70 metres high the birds were well spread and 2 guns 80 metres apart was not really enough.

The dogs had a great time, and we packed up at 5.30pm picking 52 of a possible 56 pigeons. We fired close to 200 shells between us and enjoyed some great shooting.

All but a few of the bag were young birds and they were full to bursting with wheat despite flying over a wheat stubble and a Barley stubble both with plenty of free offerings.

Many of the birds are in the freezer and quite a few are breasted out for my supper.

Thanks for reading.

well done AM.

I had recce'd a stubble twice over the last few days, identified a good line and marked as a late afternoon shoot.

Packed the car with half the gear ready for the off this afternoon.

Enter one angry wife, quoting I've had the kids last few days and i need a break.

So, spent the day doing pre-high school homework and then unpacked car, locked up the gun and generally acknowledged my testicles were in my wifes handbag.

Next venture will be saturday if the stubble hasn't been turned over.

bring on tuesday when the beloved offspring go back to school.

The best of sport on that exceptional line. One in four was good going.

Thanks J, you know how high the birds can get on this line, today was no exception, wonderful to see let alone shoot.

great day I had a similar one, birds were flighting past a wood so I set up at the edge of it decoyed some but most were shot flighting

A good day for it daz, no better way to shoot em!

The dogs looked well pleased with themselves aga man , a good day out by all and thanks for sharing .

Thanks marsh man, working the dogs today made the shoot all the more enjoyable. The chocolate dog is approaching 11 years old now so is a bit stiff and tired tonight, bless him.

Don't wish it away Fudds, you will miss it when they are up and gone {apparently} :ermm:

I've had the opposite this weekend, had the youngest past 2 mornings as Mrs on nightshift, had to get out of the house today before my head popped!

Nice one, hopefully getting out on a barley stubble this week.

Thanks Andy, hope you get some sport.

Good report, am. I had a very similar session yesterday, but 50-50 decoying/flighting for us. We got 57, and it was most enjoyable.

Thanks motty,a great time of year to shoot pigeons as you know, hopefully plenty of more great sport over the next few weeks :good:
