pigeon controller Posted September 30, 2017 Report Share Posted September 30, 2017 (edited) Following my return from Greece with temperatures of between 32 and 37 C. the drive back was cooling being diverted at two in the morning over the Gothard Pass with the temp at 4C. So I was champing at the bit to get out shooting with today being the first day possible. I Picked up DB and we set out with no idea of where to look with the birds on acorns all over the place. So it was 09.00 and we started to follow a flight line out of the city with the steady rain falling, we looked at two stubble fields they were passing over and the birds along with the corvids were droping in. So a drive to the farm to gain permission. We have shot on this farm before but he has another shooter and he tends to keep the shooting for him as it was the other shooter shot it on Wednesday so he said yes. This Farmer took over some other land we used to shoot and we asked if he had finished combining and the answer was no , two fields to go. This land is also on the edge of the city so we confirmed that we could go on that also. So we drove to the second field to look and as we got out of the Disco the dog went bounding down the field and lifted approx 100 birds so we decided to set up. We started shooting at 10.00 and the birds were very spooky and would not decoy, we changed the pattern, magnet no magnet and no flyers and ended up with just stand up birds on spikes. We called a couple of crows in range abd put them out and the pigeon started to return and we had a good two hours of mixed shooting then it just stopped when the wind dropped. We decided to move and look at the first field we had seen so we packed up and drove to the other field . This had ten birds on it and nothing joining, so we drove round the perimeter to find the hide potion that was used on Wednesday and found feathers and approx twenty crows in the hedge. We decided to drive back and set up on the field we shot earlier but moved the hide as the birds tended to favour the lefthand side of the field and agreed " We get what we get" . At 16.00 the rain stopped and the birds turned on for one hour then turned off as the rain started again. We packed up at 17.15 and the rain stopped again but no birds passed while we were packing up and we picked up 38 corvids and 76 pigeon . None of the birds shot had any food in them at all and a good number were young birds who do not know about acorns as we were seeing birds cross our field and land in a small wood of Oak trees which we would lift with every shot , this land has horses on it and they do not allow shooting, shame!! yickdaz Posted September 30, 2017 Report Share Posted September 30, 2017 great day straight after your usual annual lay off, interesting to hear that the farmer still thinks he will harvest those fields, we have a total of 4 unharvested barley fields 2 on one farm and 2 on another and they are wet with more rain on the way its doubtful, we will be keeping an eye on them through winter did you feel a bit rusty at first after not shooting for a while ? Just to rub salt in your wounds P C we were shooting Partridges yesterday in fairly bright sunshine , hardly any wind and shooting with just a thin shirt on in the afternoon with no signs of rain .
