I have always thought that the data on JC was a) somewhat optimistic and b) not necessarily up-to-date. That's hardly surprising given the number of lines they stock, but I'd always trust the manufacturers numbers over JC, with the caveat that manufacturers often overestimate how fast their cartridges are. All that said, in the case of the Hi Flyers, I'd expect the 1246fps number to be about correct, ironically enough.

Speed doesn't kill, pattern consistency does!

I am afraid that I would not regard either JC or the manufacturers figures to be at all reliable.

Hmmm....:hmm: JC, higher speeds = higher prices?

What, a selling tactic? Surely not!

Anyway - it's not very bright is it? Inflate everything by 200fps and the expensive ones look just as expensive, but only as fast as all the rest anyway.

In other news, someone influential heard about my solid gold non-tox load earlier and promised me a 3000fps steel cartridge provided I don't manufacture any of the shiny kind myself. The question is, do I take him at his word or add another gram of TNT to get 4000fps out of mine... :hmm:

Wow, that would be a hell of a blown pattern!

Hell of a blown gun. With that in mind, and due to the recent lack of success with PETN, I'm thinking of working back to one of the old classics: RDX.I reckon 23 grains of that under an ounce-and-a-quarter of lead #6 with a fibre wad should get things moving at about 8750 m/s, which I think converts to about 28,700fps...

Any takers?

If that doesn't prove popular, I'm considering uranium for both propellant (gas expansion caused due to superheating of the air during fissioning) and shot charge (for penetration, you understand - gotta blow holes right through...)... I gotta get me one of those 600-yard geese somehow...

What about using depleted uranium shot plenty heavy enough for long range energy retention, in fact it might make its own energy  why limit yourself to the close range shots of 600 yards go for the 1000 yard goose but only aim for the head.

Mid go for rocket fuel instead of powder charge and a small booster to 500 yards

imagine the mischief and loads  the pigeon watch crowd would get up to if let loose with any military components. Like kids in a sweet shop

I reckon to get the uk shooter going, really need to step up to a railgun using du rounds at mach 5 (5600 ft/sec) to give that instant kill feeling for those close up shots under 1000 yards but to give a bit of stopping power.

Personally, a nice 100kw pulse laser (giving that cooked in the air approach) might be the next step forward....

I like it.

Muzzle velocity of 983,319,262fps, give or take and a choke motty would be proud of: bore size = 0.729", muzzle (aperture) = 0.025" for a constriction of 0.704". According to the standard nomenclature, I make that "extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra extra full". It would probably be fine with steel, if the laser doesn't work out.

1000 yard goose, here I come.

Lynching by the Pigeon Watch members here you come, if you get 12 bores added to .50 Calibres as anti material weapons in the Home Office consultation.

What, even a 12 bore death star super laser? It's barely a shotgun. I'd sooner have expected a lynching from the wildfowling lot for suggesting going even an inch over 60 yards with what's obviously a perfectly good means of killing, plucking, skinning and cooking them at far greater distances. And anyway, I know the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 prohibits feeding them bread soaked with Scotch and all sorts of other more or mostly less humane ways of killing them, but does it prohibit the use of lasers?

Let me just type that out again in full: nine-hundred-and-eighty-three-million-feet-per-second.

Ha. What a cracker.

Beware of making such posts. The Terrachoke fanatic will appear and say that with Terrachokes you only need 3/4.
