Barbour?

Due to fair wear and tear coupled to a bit of a medical incident, I needed some new kit. Consequently, I spent a few bob with Ratcatcher. I like to put myself about a bit but ran into a problem with the Subject company. Then somewhat belatedly unfotrunately I discovered Cox The Saddler - could have done with these guys years back -  and finally got (just in time by the look of it) what I was after. It was possible to spend £30 on a 'T' shirt advertising Barbour and their "outdoor living" ethos. It still is albeit with a 50% reduction in choice. Similarly, the choice of one of their best known products, apart from jackets that is, has also decreased by 66% in this one outlet. I can well imagine that once the stock of these items has run out, then that's your lot.

Question is, is Barbour in the process of calling time on its 100 year tradition of country "outdoor living"? It certainly seems so to me.

I too have noticed a change in Barbour over the last years, they seem to cater more for the young upwardly mobile Chelsea tractor drivers with, whats all this "fitted Jackets", and a decline in good old classic solway zipper type coats, I understand they need to up with the times, but please barbour, dont turn your back on the good old classics we have come to love and rely on.

If you wear their moleskin trousers, you might just get lucky dependent upon size at the above outlet - probably fair to say unlikely anywhere else.

I bought a lightweight (but still quite expensive) Barbour a few years ago in the (new?) sylkoil finish as my faithful old Musto is a bit heavy in warm weather.  Initially it was OK, but after a year or so, the coating became 'slimy' and got everywhere - LandRover seats, chequering of the gun. shirt cuffs ....... everywhere.  I was glad I don't have an expensive car with leather seats!

Horrible stuff - threw it away.

Old Musto is 30 years old - and still fine.  I have a more modern Schoeffel for 'smart', which is good, but silly money for a coat really.

I love Barbour gear, waxed or otherwise. Their brushed cotton jackets ( their equivalent to Schoeffel etc ) are good jackets, ( nephew has a very nice example ) but I prefer the classic stuff. I own four waxed jackets, a quilted jacket and waxed International leggings ( bit like motorcycle trousers with buckles on the ankles ) which have proved just about bullet proof, although another pair of ordinary Barbour leggings are about to get sent for repairs as they're a bit the worse for wear.

I sincerely hope they don't cease production of their Northumbrian etc range of jackets, even though I have more than enough to see me through! I also have two Mustos, a Country covers, a Laksen and a lightweight Deerhunter....like guns and boots I don't think you can ever have enough!

Admittedly, it's not advisable to wear the waxed jackets in rain unless you're wearing the appropriate leg wear to compensate for the dispelled water! ?

If it's moleskin trousers you're after, I find Hoggs take some beating.

Barbour haven't been a shooting dedicated manufacturer for years, possibly decades. In my opinion all the better for it too because the one thing they haven't forgotten is quality and together with keeping up with up to date styles and materials I can think of few better all rounders when it comes to clothing. I have turned into something of a Barbour nut and own at least 5 jackets of various types, T/Polo shirts, shirts, wellies and just today I even bought two pairs of their jeans. ??

Oh and I have ordered the Almanac jacket for the wife's birthday next month.

Like many Companies Barbour have had to evolve to survive.

Last year I bought my 15 year old a pair of Barbour jeans, reduced in a sale, and I must say the quality was first class and made other big name jeans look shoddy in comparison.

Even my lad was impressed, which is a rarity.

I have a Barbour padded waistcoat from 1979 and despite a few barbed wire rips, which I have taped over, its still in great condition.
