What is a good idea for a 4wheel drive vehicle for myself ( 19 years old) upto £3000.

Prefer a diesel and reliability must be 100%

Thought about a Landrover 90, Suzuki vitara, Toyota hilux etc.

Trying to get lowish insurance as well-can anyone advise a cheapish company?

Thanks

If you want cheap (like the budgie) and you don't have to drive far, try looking for a second hand Suzuki Samurai.

The wife's got one and they are great fun. Every time I drive it I laugh the whole journy.

It's also great for lamping from as the whole roof can come down and you can take out the back seats. I know a couple of people here have them and got them cheap. We got ours for 500 quid and, as it's a 1300cc engine (a whole 64 bhp!!!) it's dead cheap to insure.

It might be worth getting a Landy, but trying to find a 90 diesel for less than 2-3k these days is a nightmare. Saying that, I know a man that was selling a late series 3 petrol for 1500 quid, but can you live with 17 to the gallon???

My son has a 1600cc Suzuki Vitara, he loves it. He goes off road in a quarry and has done several green lane trails with some mates, and has left landys well stuck.

As for insurance, he pays around £1300, but he is 21years old, had more points on his license than a Tesco club card, and more bangs than a Lime St. prostetute.

My Shogun is insured with NFU, my son is with CIS.

My V6 Grand Vitara eats landies and freelanders for breakfast... On and off road :P:P

Sam.. For about 3 grand you should be able to get a s/h Daihatsu Fourtrack

Absolutely bombproof..

My Uncle had one 185k miles incredibly reliable and probably withstand a direct hit from a A10 tank Buster!!!

Scour the internet for insurance quotes.. Direct line or Churchill always pretty cheap.

I have a Toyota Hilux. If you watched the top gear recently you will know how just how hard these vehicles are! :P

I have 125,000 miles on the clock - and not one of those miles has been an easy one.

I usually have had a landie in the past, however buying a s/h one for that price and you will be buying trouble, unless you go for an ex-MOD one.

Guest Mr Pieman

I have a Suzuki Samurai and do all my shooting etc with it. Also use it for the school run, Mrs Pieman takes it to town shopping etc. Cost £600-00. Very reliable and goes just about anywhere - bearing in mind the vehicle is only part of the off road equation, you need to add good off road tyres and skill of the driver :*)

Got an ex RAF Landrover 110 hardtop 300TDI in September, 90,000 on the clock and in excellent condition (those boys really know how to look after stuff).

Unfortunatley, there was of course no radio, speakers or aerial. A sufficiently powerful CD player (purchsed from Ebay) was installed, along with a set of speakers. I put an folded back aerial (from an old Rover) on the roof, but managed to snap it off when reversing into a low archway.

Neither were there any steps so I had to add these too, but got some from a mate who had spares.

I put underbody sealer all over the chassis and have got a can of some anti-rust spray stuff a mate will spray inside the chassis section soon.

The only problem is that the dealership resprayed part of one door and didn't realise RAF livery is a slightly different shade to Landy Blue!

I also managed to get a full set of off-road Michelin tyres from a Government depot for between £10 and £25 each. One still had some pimples around the outside!

I totally agree, My Mitsy L200 has great big nobbly ******* on it, and even with a good contact, they still cost £90 a piece. :P

Look at the insurance first, and bear in mind that if you buy a pick up, you will probably have to pay commercial insurance on it. :P

If I were you I would look at a Pajero import, and try Cranners' insurance contact.

I'm with you vd on this one ...jimbo please tell us how commercial insurance is cheaper than domestic , as i have two vans that i would love a nice cheap quote on !

I think you should have a ring round and find out the cost for a little escort van compaired to a car mate .. You'll brick yourself !

As for the comment about a pajero ! Spot on ! As it happens i have a very nice exceed for sale ! You'll need a few more pennys though !

all the best yis yp :P

Hi there, first off is that landies are cheap for insurance as their grouping is low and the price of spares is a reason for this, toyotas etc are more expensive and the fact that my new'ish truck is a group 16 gave me an idea of the price i would be paying to the comercial market insurance providers, landies can be easily insured with any normal car company but pick ups such as the hilux are more difficult.I searched a few brokers to find somone that would cover my double cab.If you are seriously looking at any kind of truck look at the work its done and the mileage and the service history dont be too fussed with the age.

I have just picked up my latest 4 x 4 which is a Toyota Double cab pick up which has 30,000 miles with a full service history and I saw a print out from the dealer that showed all the parts ever fitted to the vehichle.Ok it hasn't the best paint job in the world but it would soon get like that any way,it has a new 1yr mot and i had to fit a new bed liner,in all it cost me only £6188 no vat for a 99 T plate ,every other one I looked at was £8500 or £10000 for the same but higher mileage and none had a full service book,I think I got a good deal,i wish i knew what kind of MPG it will return.

If I had my choice and drove shorter distances I would have a landie but as i need to travel, there was the next option of the hilux.Take a few for a drive and you will have a feel for what you want.

Hi

as a landrover devotee, my automatic response is a landrover, 90's and 110's have lots of room in them, and are cheap and easy to repair,

once you own a landy you become a member to some kind of unspoken club, you will find other owners give you a smile when passing, and god forbid if you stop at the roadside to change a tyre , you generally find another owner stops to lend a hand or just ask if one is needed!!!

anyways enough about landrover patriotism! onto the nitty gritty, my experience of insuring landrovers is a happy one, NFU Mutual give very good service and as landys are around group 2 to 3 , you won't find cheaper unless robin reliants and 14 yr old mini's are your thing.

but if i havent persuaded you to go the "landrover" way, at least get hold of a copy of landrover owner magazine and look how cheap they are to repair and keep on the road!, then try and get a price for another 4x4!!!!

enough said!

regards

Andrew.

Everything that acs has said is correct.

However he forgot to mention that if you dont have a comprehensive tool kit now, you soon will have once youve bought a Landy.

It all comes down to how much you want to spend, and if you want to spend as much time fixing the Landy as you do shooting.

Landys, great hobby, krap reliability.
