fatchap
I have a pendant grinder made by Ridgid Tools and I keep getting a belt off it, I think its static build up, It came with a UK plug adaptor but the plug that goes into the adaptor lacks an earth, but the cable has an earth inside, Can I just cut the American plug off and fit a UK plug? or is it more complicated than that? Snoozer
I'm no leccy but fitting a uk plug is in my book good practise assuming the Earth wire is connected at the Grinder, How old is it as I'd expect most electrical power tools without an Earth would be Double insulated from factory but like I say I be no x'spert meself Edited September 1, 2019 by Snoozer grammmer
Jacko3275
I’m not a sparky but why wouldn’t you be able to as long as the fuse is the same amperage
fatchap
I've cit the plug off and it has 3 cables inside inc earth. The adaptor they supplied was not earthed. Edited September 1, 2019 by fatchap
Snoozer
It can't have 2 cables inc the Earth or it wouldn't work, Do you mean 2 cables plus an Earth ?

Are you sure it was an American plug, American voltage is 120vac I believe.
figgy
Americans also use some 240v in workshops and homes for certain tools and appliance's. Adding an earth is a good thing. Did you always get a jolt or is it a recent thing. If recent get the equipment checked could be internal fault. Yellow Bear
It would be a good idea to see if the earth is connected at the appliance end and if so what to before doing anything else.
fatchap
Thanks for the replies chaps. I have had a sparky look at it and it is double insulated, I had cut the 2 pin plug off to see if it contained an earth, he said The problem with the machine is the Aluminium handle. He said while the machine is running its a bit like a mini Van Der graph generator, static build up which goes to ground as soon as you touch something that is grounded in this case my bench grinder.. He demonstrated by first fitting a 3 pin plug and holding the handle as the machine was running and the hairs on his arm started to rise. As soon as he took his foot off the foot pedal the hairs on his arm dropped and he could safely touch anything grounded without getting zapped so I am hoping problem solved.
