"Craft" as such is a marketing thing - They are just (mainly) small independent breweries, brewing for a chuckle and a small profit if possible, because they're fed up to the eye teeth with insipid lager and ales being badly served in rubbish chain pubs.

If you want to make your own, watch this

I used to live literally just along the road from where this video was filmed! I've spent quite some time in that very shed, and its neighbouring sheds, with the featured gentleman "Yonny" making and chatting endlessly about beer :)  He's a legend, you couldn't meet a nicer bloke.  He helped set me up brewing properly.  It's a shame he packed up his home brew shop "Copper Kettle" but he's now making some excellent beer with Boot Town Brewery

I think the "Roobard & Custard" is one of the brewery's most popular lines!

I'm a good friend of Yonny's too, also through brewing.  He is doing alright, although a lot of the beers he does now arent my thing.  They do an IPA called Ultramagnetic which is very drinkable though.

I am spending a chunk of my life working away from home just now and in the Spar shop neighbouring my regular hotel they have a fantastic collection of craft beers from maybe 20-30 independent micro breweries and probably 100-150 different beers available. For those in the north east of Scotland it is the fuel station/Spar shop in Elrick/Westhill.

The explosion in craft brewers had largely passed me by until I saw the range in this wee shop.  I know there are a lot of folk who do micro brewing at home, there is a great thread in the food & drink section on this that has had me awfully tempted to give it a bash, but i really had no idea that it was so popular and the finished product so professional.

Looking at the collection i am actually overwhelmed with what to try, there are some 330ml tins from £2 to £14 and tins of a pint in measure or more.  I thought most craft beer was bottled, but i’ve had my eyes opened.

Tonight i picked up a wee collection of a marshmallow based porter ale called Stay Puft, a chilli porter called La Federal and a chocolate stout called Moose Mousse (pic attached).  All were very good and i’m resisting the temptation to wander round there and get some more.

As i’m expecting to be spending a considerable part of the next year in this hotel i fully intend to explore a lot more.  I thought i was decently travelled in trying many beers and ales, but i’m absolutely delighted to discover that there is a great voyage of discovery ahead of me.

I know that there will certainly Be many beer fans amongst the PW world so any recommendations would be gratefully received.

If Islandgun reads this post, i think along with the food that you make for folk visiting the Hebridean paradise you call home a wee micro brewery would while away many an hour of pleasure too.

Mate, you cant really go wrong with North Brewing Co, Polly (from Mold), DEYA (rolling man is brilliant), Verdant.

All great UK brewers.

Touch Sensitive by North was one of the best beers of its style I've ever had. T'was unreal.

TESCO BEERS -

Love and Hate by Vocation is a great supermarket 'craft' beer.

Even though Brewdog are a bunch w*****s, Roaster Coaster is one hell of a good coffee nitro stout.

Evil Twin pale is a solid all day brew.

Hazy Little Thing, another all dayer.

Thronbridge Jamestown, easy drinking.

For non supermarket ale, try RAD Beer from here in Shropshire, good selection and good prices. They sell all the top ales from Omnipollo, North, Polly etc.

Feel free to give me a shout if you want to know anymore, my brother and I are craft beer w*****s.

Although i don't drink beer i generally do okay with freebies from the brewing department at the uni . they have a whisky tasting society and afterwards they trek back to the brewing dept and get a free crate of beer , Last time it was stuff the students had brewed and they put fruit in it i gave my son in law a  mixed crate daughter said after 2 bottles he was away with it . This year i was talking to the technician's and they said they where having a clear out and i could take it roughly 1500 litres  might need to split this one with the shift LOL
