old'un
Very nice job, well done, what’s the inscription on the top of the case? and what’s the makers name on the label?

alan123shooting
The label is Thomas Horsley, the case was for their bar in wood hammer gun. The inscription is J.M Sagar Musgrave Esq Red Hall near Leeds which ties up with the label Edited April 10, 2020 by alan123shooting
old'un
I see the label is not in the restored case, have you kept it? Be interesting to-do some research on J.M Sagar Musgrave Esq to find out who he was, or do you already know?
alan123shooting
Yes still have it , it was well worn I had to cut it out still attached to the baize I’m in the stages of stabilising it before refitting or if I can find a better original Sagar Musgrave owned a local brewery he was a Major in the 2nd West York’s Yeomanry Cavalry died in 1906 Edited April 10, 2020 by alan123shooting
old'un
Thanks for that, nice to have a bit of history to go with the case and its owner, bet you wish you had the gun that went with it.
alan123shooting
To right I fitted one years ago they are gorgeous but serious money in good condition, I do have the nearest thing a Westley Richards bar in wood hammer dates from 1869 and it cased
Dave at kelton
Nice job I am just fitting a percussion case from scratch, and not as good as your job. Looking for mahogany for a lid.

Westley
Lovely job. Do not know where you sourced the green baize lining, but I bought a crossword mat in the local charity shop at 50p. I use that on the kitchen table as a gun cleaning mat. I have since seen another 2 in there. They come in a large cardboard tube, ideal for storing cleaning rods in. They measure aprox 3' x 2' so 2 of them would easily line a case for the grand sum of £1.
oldypigeonpopper
hello, Red Hall was built mid 1600s by Thomas Metcalf, Saga Musgrave is shown to live there 1865 1937
alan123shooting
Sounds interesting, it would depend on the thickness too thick and you alter the internal dimensions I tend to use Melton wool which is what is used in the originals, have you any pictures of the baize? 1 minute ago, oldypigeonpopper said: hello, Red Hall was built mid 1600s by Thomas Metcalf, Saga Musgrave is shown to live there 1865 1937 Cheers

Cheers Now, I can certainly take some pictures, BUT as to my getting them on here, well, that could be a different matter. I will have a go tomorrow (phone on charge). It is a similar thickness to snooker table cloth and I used to get the old cloths to re-line gun cases and cabinets many years ago. It certainly seems thin enough to me.
