From memory, he ran out of fuel, glided in to land and then scuttled his plane using his flare gun. Not sure how true to history all that is but it made for a pertinent and dramatic film scene nonetheless! 9 hours ago, ditchman said: aluminum dosnt burn like ply wood........and the spinner /prop is pointing downwards with 1/2ton of V12 behind it....think not..... 8 hours ago, figgy said: He ran out of fuel, what was burning in an aluminium plane ? All that deep orange flame with black smoke. Like a fossil fuel fire Jim it is a shockingly poor representation of in particular the crashed spitfire but overall a lousy film. treetree
Terrible film. Although the soundtrack with the variation on Elgar's Nimrod is rather good. 1917 was also a load of rubbish, like watching a video game with the main character having to navigate one ridiculous event after the next. figgy
We should have all learned by now, if some historical event is made into a film it will bare little resemblance to the actual facts. I enjoyed Greyhound with Tom Hanks, I have no idea of if it is near the truth, but was good watching. I know the Wolfpack's were sinking vessels and naval escorts were present. I don't think the plane is being portrayed as crashed, rather that it was glided in and then he set it on fire by firing his flare gun into the cockpit - a bona fide method of destroying a plane to prevent its capture by the enemy, so I understand. Questionable but remotely conceivable which is just about "allowable" in the context of making a dramatic final scene of a big budget movie! Sometimes you just have to switch off the analytical part of your brain and allow yourself to be taken on the journey! As for the film being lousy, that's a matter of personal taste and opinion but it did well at the cinemas so plenty of people must have liked it!
