In that case probably to gather the droppings for fertiliser or gun powder.

You may well be right! The info I got on it was that they were used for keeping the birds plus their eggs for food.

There are some really nice looking ones if you google Dovecotes and go to images. This one sits on the shores of lough foyle, as you can see in the background.

The eggs were eaten and some off the eggs allowed to hatch and the chick grow to a flightless squab when it, too, was then eaten. In France there was a limit on the pigeons you could keep according to the area of your landholding. As pigeons forage at will and don't care who's crops or land they done off!

However a small landowner wishing to appear to be a large landowner could build a large pigeon house. Giving the outward appearance that as he had a large pigeon house he had the right to keep a large number of pigeons. Therefore owning a large area of land.

So you might marry you daughter to him and when the truth came out realise you'd been fooled! Thus the French phrase "Vous m'avez pigeonne!" Literally "You have pigeoned me." which we'd say as being "Sold a pup."

Hello, so where is this interesting building ??

It's in the ''coolest place on the planet'' Well that was official in 2017.

It sits on the shores of Lough Foyle on the Inishowen peninsula in Co Donegal. Across the lough is Magilligan which once had one of the largest commercial rabbit warren's in Europe.
