I wasn’t a fan of the 1979 version, but enjoyed the original, which quite closely followed the book if I recall. It’s a long time since I read it.

Really good watch, there’s not many war films like that where they have you laughing one minute then utterly shocked the next. 
 

The scene with the goose had me cracking right up. 
 

The scene with the flame throwers was eye opening, as was the munitions factory where they found all those lads … 

 

Really enjoyed it to be fair thought it was really well made.
