Was It Worth Getting Wet For ? You Bet It Was

Having left it till the beginning of the month to make a start , I can't say I really missed the first two months as the weather was dry and warm with all the livestock still on the grazing fields , this is not to say I wasn't keeping a eye on them as I am down the marshes one way or another virtually every day of the week , at long last they started to take the horses off a few days before the 1st of November and within a few days they were all gone , this just left a few small herds of Cattle and now we are just left with a few that will go very shortly .

I have had one or two little goes and the first Mallard , Wigeon and Teal have already been bagged with my ( new ) gun , I say new but it could well be getting on for 70 / 80 years .

Well today started off alright with dry weather but very quickly the wind got up and the rain arrived just before dinner , within an hour it was pouring and looked set to be in for the afternoon , at exactly 4 pm it was time to take the dog out , at the time I had no intention in taking my gun as I am well past the thought of getting wet , when walking down my driveway it had all but stopped and a little bit of brightness was in the direction where the sun go down , I was now in two minds but no it still looked as more was on the way , I was now on my way and getting to the slip road it had a road closed sign up so I had to turn round and go back past my house to get to the next road , as it had just about stopped raining I made the quick decision to pop indoors and get my gun just in case , time I got down the marsh the light was already going and if anyone was already down there then I would give it a miss , as the gate was locked I knew I was going to be by myself as no one would likely come behind me , very soon I had parked my motor and I had three marshes to cross to the spot where I intended to see the rest of the day out .

Walking across the light rain was getting slightly heavier but still nothing to worry about , getting to my spot my dog put up four Wigeon when he decided to have a splash around in the shallow water , it was now blowing hard and at the light where you can expect duck to drop in at any minute , this proved the case when a single duck came from behind and turned into the wind which was his down fall , and what I thought was a Wigeon turned out to be a smallish hen Pintail , by now the rain was getting harder and that was soon forgot about when two more duck were crossing and dropping in front of me and when I fired my first shot I wasn't sure if I had got one as they were dropping into a dark background but when only one started to climb up I knew one was down and the other one ended up my first right and left with my new gun , after getting one more single one I had enough and the heavy rain was getting in everywhere , ten minutes later I was back to my motor , the four wet duck were put on the back seat with the uncased gun as this will get a wipe down as soon as I get home , getting home a few minutes later I was hanging the duck up in the garage when my wife was more concerned how wet my dog was than how wet I was , make you wonder how we have stuck together for 48 years , bless her   MM

are you going to roast them boy ?

Not at the moment as I brought a brace of Pheasants home from our shoot last Saturday and with it being fairly mild they will be plucked over the next couple of days .

Tell yer what , if you want a Pintail and a Wigeon , or a pair of Wigeon then let me know and they will be on the way to Sandringham as soon as I get your address , all boxed up and f o c , the only charge will be a write up from you to say how they were cooked and what they tasted like , deal or no deal :drinks:

Great start and great offer, right and left first outing, do i remember right, is the new gun a T Wild

Evening islandgun ,  No it wasn't my first outing as I have been a few times since I started from the 1st of November , but it was my first right and left at Wigeon with the new addition in the gun cabinet and yes your memory is still in excellent condition, it is a T Wild of Birmingham and to keep it company I have also got a nice T Wild hammer gun that is nitro proof and in sound condition , I have used it on a few pigeons but haven't shot a single duck or goose with it as I wouldn't be happy putting 36 gm in the breech if an ole goose happened to turn up :good:

Very good write up 👍👍I enjoyed reading.

The bits about "10 minutes back to the car" and "a few minutes later I was hanging the ducks in the garage " make me really jealous 👍👍👍😉😉😉😉

I don't know if I would have done as much wild fowling as I have done if I had to travel a fair distance to take part in my sport or should I say passion , I lived in my last house exactly 40 years the week I moved and I was born in a house on the next road so all told I was in the village for just over 60 years , in the school playground we hear the shots now and again from the estuary that were only a couple of hundred yards away , as time wore on I rented a boat shed to keep our gun punts in that was just down the end of our road and we walked wherever we wanted to also the local wildfowling club which is still going was formed in the village in the mid 1950s.

Now I have moved nearly three miles away I am nearer to the other end of marshes where I now do most of my inland duck shooting than I was before I moved , just to make you even more jealous , one night I left the farm where I leave my motor and I timed it to when I was reversing up my drive and would you believe it took 6 minutes , that is why I don't normally leave mine till it is started to get dark and if a member is on the marsh then I can go on the ones next door that I have had the sole shooting for getting close on 50 years , I am now looking out of the window to see if the rain had stopped , if it had I might well be tempted to have another little go .
