Gutted!

I'm at that age where semi retirement or at least slowing down is upon me (aaahhhh!) Which I hope will mean more pigeon shooting time (woohoo) but today I discovered that a large portion of my main and best permission is going to be a massive solar farm. We knew one was on the cards, though not on my shoot, this has now changed as a second company has applied for the right to go ahead, taking fields and a small wood where I go. One of the fields is right behind my workshop and is great for an impromptu few hours on the woodies. Gutted.

Never mind , when one door shut another one will open , now you have got more time on your hands you can put the feelers out and hopefully drop on some more land , try some beating on your local estate , or maybe a wildfowling club that is nearby as they normally have pigeon shooting as well as fowling , by being able to go at very short notice and at weekdays you have got the advantage over the weekend shooters so make use of your free time , you have earnt it :good:

Thanks man, been feeling pretty low since hearing the news this morning. Made enquiries a few years back to the local wildfowlers club, it was darned expensive and you have to wait until someone leaves or dies. I'll look into beating, not sure at the moment if there are any local estates that have shoots.

Our local club is just over £200 and if you have been a club member for five years and you are an a o a p then you get about a third reduction on your membership fee , that include B A S C membership and all the shooting you could wish for so I wouldn't say that is expensive ?

If you have got any stately homes or large halls with plenty of ground there will be a good chance they will run a game shoot , either ring them up or send a email and ask them if you can have the keepers telephone number as you would like to put your name down for some beating , or brushing as it is known around these parts , they are now well into the game season so well worth making the inquiry .

I was told the initial fee for the local club was over £1000 and a bit over £200 per year there after. Steep in my opinion but I guess its worth another look

I don't know of any local club that would charge 1000 pound as a joining fee , I would have thought under £300 for a one off joining fee and a years membership included :hmm:

Look a little further than the local club perhaps. There are a number within the fair county of Essex.

Sorry to hear that. I lost my rabbit hunting permission a year or two ago, a very large farm. Had a lot of fun there over the years and lots of rabbits/hares. Nothing else has come up, so my .22 sits in the gun cabinet feeling sorry for itself. I have concentrated on other types of hunting though and seem to have improved my skills in those areas.

Maybe not in the same situation as the op as I had other places to shoot over, but a few years back I had a decent size block of very good duck shooting marshes for well over forty years all to myself , like they say that all good things come to a end and after the lady who owned the land died her sons put the block on the market , as luck would have it ,the farmer who let a lot of his land to the other local wildfowling club ended up buying them , I was then in a different club so I packed that one in after being in it for 15 years and rejoined my ole club where I spent well over half my life from when I joined it as a 16 year ole in 63 , so I will now end my time wildfowling in the same club where it all started , like I said , when one door shut another one open , and it is up to you if you want to go through it . :good:

I've just found out from the farmer that I have a bit of a reprieve, the solar farm is not due to go ahead for 5 years and not this or the following spring as I was first told. Phew🤪 Great to hear all of your experiences

They will be waiting on grid connection.

Now you have got some breathing space , used the extra time to try and sort out a plan b rather than wait till the time come , believe you me there are new perms to be had if you  made the effort to seek then out , start scanning the local rape fields near you and if a gas gun is on the field then all the better , that will tell you that there is a good chance the land owner have got , or suspect he will soon be getting a problem with pigeons , even if you can't see any at the moment , find out whose land it is and go and ask him if you can keep an eye on the field(s) to help to stop any pigeon damage , you might get the odd set back but when I was looking for land I used to think I had nothing to lose and everything to gain , now I have given up most of the land over five miles away as I have got all I want on my door step , so start looking around now , rather than brood in a few years time . MM

A lot of the farms i used to shoot on where sold to build houses on and i was a bit peeved to find out it was my sister in laws boyfriend was the main land buyer for barrat  i always thought he was a P . I just moved with the farmers to the new farms and with the money they got they bought bigger farms . Only downside was permissions used to be 5 minutes from my door now i got to travel but i used to travel up to 2 hours each way for a ferreting job

Many thanks for the encouragement. I've got the number for another farm, but always feel face to face is the best way and if I get the green light, then a nice bottle of red and some cheese at Christmas, plus some dog treats keeps the land owner on side, it's not "creeping" rather showing appreciation
