Long Range Patterns

Recommended Posts

For research purposes, it's 10 but for the more usual field test 6 shots  are required to get a reasonable working average pattern result. This is because it has been measured that from 10 shots through the same gun/choke and the cartridges from the same box the pattern percentage ranged from 23 to almost 70%. As explained in the BASC Pattern Test article, sadly, there are no short cuts.

Thanks for that Wymberly.

Looks like it’s of center to me more to the right if it was over to the left you would have more shot in the 10 circle

Yep, very windy day when this was done. If it was centred the pattern would be between 50-60% I think.

Moral of the story, DON'T test on windy days!

A bit like zeroing a rifle on a windy day .

Kinda pointless

Some of us work for a living, and have to pattern our guns on the time off that we have, even when the weather isn't so accommodating...

You know, I started this thread as a bit of a light-hearted attempt to get people involved and see what shotguns can do at range.

Instead, it's all just sneering criticism!

Have a good day you old windbags, I shan't bother anymore.

I work for a living too.

What you tried to do would have been admirable if you had done it properly.

Then you start the name calling!

So why not do it properly and then post some interesting and useful results?

Let's see what's possible. By long range I mean in excess of 40 yards.

I'll go first.

This is 46g BBB steel at 60 yards. This was a windy day and the pattern has been blown off to the right. Still, about half the pellets made it onto the paper.

Given that the birds flying with the wind it’s a kill in my book

always seems to be windy or rain when I’m shooting

but I live in the real world

410 lead 7 two shots at same target 40 yards

I'm not trying to be fascitious  .shotgun groups open up more in the wind than they do in still conditions  . And testing the difference between still and windy can be very interesting  and help when shooting birds and clays to know what wind and direction does to the pattern and ultimately  kill range .

I'd recommend  finding a control base with no wind first and then taking it from there as far as pattern size and wind drift is concerned  .

Again with rifles calm zero first and then learn  drift and drop in windy conditions from different directions .

Please don't take offence it wasn't meant as such . I guess my simple observation  was a bit crude .I apologise  .

Stu

To add .

Those bbb pellets at 60 yds really didn't drift that much given the amount of wind you said you were having .I guess a high bc and good terminal velocity helps buck the wind .food for thought on high bird days in the wind .

The “Ignore” function of the forum is a wonderful tool! There is only one user on my list at the moment but I feel more may be added soon 😂
