I dont think they're elm as the base of the leaf is even. They look more like hazel, any sign old the old nut at the base? Purple hazel is quite common as well.

Hazel seems to have jogged my memory as I'm 90% sure I planted some Hazelnuts last year. I do intend replanting them in individual pots later in the week, so hopefully I will see what's under the earth.

I planted hazel, sweet chestnut and oak last year. Only the oak germinated, could not find anything in the other pots, seed just disappeared.

I have no wildlife such as mice in my garden, mystery.

The year before last, I had planted loads of Acorns in small troughs, and put them on my shed roof to germinate. The bloody Crows, Pigeons and I believe Seagulls took the lot without me knowing.  I now have plastic mesh protecting last years, although the many Acorns that I planted have failed to germinate, and they've just rotted in the soil. I'll try again this year.

would it help if you put the acorns in the freezer for a few weeks before planting ?

It's the first time that I've had so many rotting in the soil. I always expect around 10% to fail. Hopefully, when I plant more this year, I'll have better results.
