How far away was the kestrel when you took the photo?

Why do you ask that question out of interest?  I would guess approximatly 50 x 60 yards.

used to see them on a regular basis now to many buzzards and gosshawks

Shame that, not to many Buzzards and Goss near to me.

If you know the location of Goss then you may receive a PM from me.

Yep I also think their numbers have decreased, used to see them all the time but not as common now.

I agree been into wildlife photography for 27 years now and I can confirm most subjects have already declined unfortunatly.

Great picture !!! I've actually recently seen two hovering close to me over roadside verges,,,, unfortunately, I was driving [quite slowly] at the time ☹️ It's amazing to see them up very close 😀

Yes always nice to observe one never mind two.

Just curious as the lens has made it look really close. (I know little or nothing about photography)

Excellent pictures. Thank you for posting and please continue to do so.

The image was taken on a Canon R3 Body.

Canon RF 600 F/4 lens with a Canon Extender RF 1.4x attached.

Image has been cropped in Photoshop and resized for the web.

If I shoot something static, I can frame straight from camera position but in flight I normally have to crop for the best framing of the subject due to erratic and fast movement.

My eyes are not as they used to be and I'm getting week as I grow older with holding the equipment.

 Thanks for viewing

Yes indeed,,,, saw one hovering last year, roadside verge again, at my eye level. I was driving slow at the time and could creep past [no other traffic] watching it about 20 feet away from me 😀 Amazing 😁

Keep posting 👍

When I saw the headline "Kestrel shot with ...... ", I thought "Oh no, not again" - but this time it's a nice photo.  Well done.

On the subject of decline, we have a strange 'shift' in what is declining and what is thriving;

Doing visibly well (i.e. seeing noticeably more) - Buzzards, Red Kites, Ravens (and Corvids in general), Jays, Magpies, Tawny and Barn Owls, Pigeons, Goldfinches, Wagtails, Canada Geese and a few others

Doing visibly badly (i.e. seeing noticeably less) - House sparrows, Collared Doves, Little Owls, Curlews, Martins, Swifts and again a few others.
