Doormat
And….. Done!! (just needs painting….just!! 🫣) Took it upstairs to see how it will look. Straight off the bat realised the chrome knob is too high, I think it needs to be same height as wardrobe doors?? Other than that, I think it’s ok. The floor is slightly out had to put a packer under one corner as the straight lines off the architrave showed up the box leaning. Couple of pictures to show how it looks, once painted I’ll add a few more. Edited July 30 by Doormat
TIGHTCHOKE
Looks very good. I see what you mean about the little knob. What colour will you paint it?
oldypigeonpopper
Hello, Well done, You maybe right on door knob but the same color as side draws would look nice
miki
I take it @Doormatthat you are not in the UK ?
Doormat
Yes, I live in the UK, Re-Door Knob Having pondered it I think I’m going to lower it just a fraction, not the same height as the wardrobe doors, reason is it might be moved elsewhere in the house, wife thinks it will look smart in the corner of the living room with her vase atop !! 😬 The paint colour will be Satin/Matt white - water based so it doesn’t yellow. I think white is quite smart and classy, but can always change if not. My locks came, they are just cheap drawer locks. As it’s MDF it won’t take much effort for someone to break open, the locks are more to stop my 17yr old son and his mates using them whilst I’m out the house. I’m considering adding a more secure lock inside to keep the rifles in their designated bays. Not yet sussed it out, but sure something will inspire me soon enough. Hopefully I’ll get the lock fitted and the knob moved (fill the old hole too) Then it’s just a case of removing all the hardware and begin the painting process. Doormat
Not much progress as feel slightly guilty spending time on “my” project whilst wife and son sat around. Yesterday they were both out so took the opportunity to fit the lock. I’ll be honest I didn’t think it through properly when routing the grooves in the door, knew I’d fit a lock, but just assumed they’d be a workaround…. Well, the lock design dictated exactly its placement on the door which typically interfered with my routed groove. With very careful measuring I managed just to keep it away… talking 1mm The door now shuts and locks with absolutely no play whatsoever, hoping the paint thickness doesn’t create issue down the line. unfortunately the lock barrel is not central, meaning the knob - which needed to be inline is also not central. The positioning height wise is better, feels very natural either pulling the door open or inserting keys, no stooping to see. Filled and sanded the old hole now painting begins… Edited August 4 by Doormat
Doormat
Just to add… one of the reasons for not lowering the knob further is because the keep for the lock barrel would then also be lower. As it’s made out of metal I think it would only be a matter of time before I scraped either the stock, barrel or sights. it’s higher placement has solved that scenario- nothing to catch, snag on now. 👍🏻

Because I really didn’t want it to look like gun cabinet. First coat (MDF primer) is on, as expected looks a pigs ear 😂 Couldn’t find my roller tray, shops shut so had to use a brush 😳 FUN!! Having a day out tomorrow so hopefully will pick up a tin of undercoat and 4” roller tray Tuesday.
ph5172
As for keeping the guns in I have seen 2 staples mounted at each end of the barrel holders (in your case) and then a flat metal bar over them secured by 2 padlocks. failing that a cheap coated bike wire lock around the trigger guards will keep them together nicely

Circled yellow below - don’t want to remove as it will leave a hole (I didn’t fit them) My other idea is to use a multitool cutter and cut deep into each divider on the edge facing outwards (the door) then insert stainless steel plates secured by stainless countersunk screws from the side - does that make sense? once I had plates protruding I could machine a stainless plate at work that would cover all 4 bays. however, for the time being I’ll just use the door lock. I can always fit trigger locks to each gun? Edited August 4 by Doormat

Doormat
Well, I’m still at it the painting is taking forever!! I was off last week so carried on…OMG!! mdf primer, flatten, prime again….undercoat, flatten undercoat again topcoat, flatten, top coat again it’s taking forever!!!! I’m now painting the drawers, just need to flatten and apply two top coats The cabinet had to be inverted to paint the bottom…again 6 coats!!! I’m now adding flat feet, found a piece of oak in garage, cut 70mm squares, used a round-over bit on the edges, now currently gluing up! Tomorrow I’ll add a few screws to each I intended not to have feet, but the flat base on the carpet was slightly unsteady, so decided to add flat feet that should bite into the carpet…she’s not happy 😂 Edited August 17 by Doormat
Doormat
Almost there…. almost there.. just waiting for the drawers to dry, so I can flatten and add the final coat. Refitted all the hardware. Shuts beautifully. Pleased with the gaps around the door, it’s a snug fit!! Had to flatten the paint on the door edges with very fine paper as it was just ever so slightly catching. The soft close hinges pull the door in, the magnetic catch then makes a click as it makes contact with the steel plate. Absolutely no movement or rattling. Hopefully it should be fully completed in 48hrs. Taken a crazy amount of work, way more than I anticipated. The total build cost of MDF, hardware and paint is roughly £100… so wasn’t cheaper than buying a proper used gun cabinet. But the difference is it won’t look out of place in the house. Most importantly she’s happy 😂👍🏻 Not sure I want to start another project just yet…. Edited August 18 by Doormat

Shambam1962
Well done, that looks very good 👍 I was going to make the same sort of thing to cover my steel 10 gun cabinet a few years ago, but eventually opted to position the cabinet in another place. Thanks i had exactly the same thought but the cabinets I viewed were all the wrong proportions. Too big, too narrow, too tall etc etc. then I had to factor the extra girth of cladding… hence I didn’t bother 😂
Doormat
Decided to take it upstairs out of harms way, not that I was getting giddy 😂 The drawers still not dry enough for the 2nd coat Tried my rifles to see what it looked like.. Oh my 💕 worth all the hardwork. The hardwood feet work better, but still had to place a shim under the front right as the architrave on the wardrobe showed the box leaning slightly. Clearly the carpet isn’t laid perfectly flat. So, all done and dusted will probably take 3/4 weeks for the paint to properly cure. Im going to buy some cork matting 1/4” thick to line both drawers and place under the rifle butts - don’t want my paint getting marked!! 😂👍🏻 Thanks to everyone who’s posted with ideas and motivations. Now the hunt begins for that HW98, I think I’ve earned it!! Edited August 18 by Doormat
