Back on the peas

Recommended Posts

After a busy spell shooting rape stubbles, I thought I’d check the peas I’d shot a lot over earlier on as they’ve died off rapidly and Dad had seen a few there when he’d glanced earlier in the week.
Finishing work early yesterday and home to pick up the truck by 12 o clock this was where I headed, and within the ten minutes I was sat there eating my lunch it was pretty clear I’d get some shooting, and knowing the lines didn’t need to watch any longer. Off to pick up Dad we were back there and sat up for 13:30, I decided to use the 28 bore as it was a standing crop.
Wind direction wasn’t ideal and ended up quartering into the hide, not quite head on but being a strong wind meant a lot of overflying birds that were really struggling to to get in, or coming overhead and flaring away on the wind,  those that did were challenging and away on the wind very quickly! A good few were swooping into the decoys initially battling against the wind and the 20/30 mark came quickly.
For the following couple of hours however there was a strong flight but they’d stopped committing and it was a real struggle to get up round the 80 mark.
At around 4:30 onwards they suddenly started to turn into the pattern more, and got better and better until I stopped shooting at 18:30 with birds still keen to get in. The clicker showed 180 and we picked 163, which far exceeded expectations!

Well done buddy, they were exactly the same for us today wind was quartering into us birds  coming from behind and finding it difficult to come in had another line coming from the right into the wind that was the main source of the shooting

Another out of the top drawer quality bag , getting all these good bags is fine , but you are going to find it hard coming back down to our level with lower numbers , something we can easily get used to

I’m quite capable of shooting smaller bags too 🤣!
Been a lot of pigeons in my area this year, more than usual so I’m making the most of it…..a lot has come from peas being grown on good farms/fields which won’t be the same next year!

I’m pleased for those getting good bags at the moment. The stubbles around here are virtually devoid of pigeons for some reason.

Great bag and excellent report.

Many thanks for posting.
