Tonight I thought I would try something a bit different from my normal dinner for one type of meals , I had recently bought a slow cooked Gammon shank from Waitrose , no I am far from being well off , the only reason I bought it was it had been reduced and was worth giving it a go , I done it a good ten minutes longer than it said and it was alright but a bit fatty in places , so another tea that was alright but it would have to be well reduced before I bought another one.

Got a 'upmarket' aldi gammon (not the cheapest one) in the fridge for friday, ussually cut a couple of slices off for gammon steaks each for me and wife and then cube the rest and make pea and ham soup with 500g of split peas etc so nice and thick, which usually gives 6 microwave systema type mugs, so 3 lunches each.

PEA AND HAM SOUP

Dried split peas

Cubed ham

Water,  or better still, the stock in which the ham was cooked (read the pea cooking instructions for the quantity)

Into a slow cooker overnight

If it looks solid enough to slice, add a little more more water.

Deelish

Normally, sweat leak and celery in large soup pot, add gammon cubed of 1inch and sweat, add 2 stock ham cubes, 1.5l to 2l water (to start off, can add more), 500g washed split peas, some white pepper to taste (can add more later) bring to boil and simmer for 45min. Remove meat with slotted spoon and crush (flake) and return to pot for 5 min, then hand blender with stick (or put in blender) till not quite smooth. Ladle into mugs and when cool put in fridge. Stays good for 3\4 days.

The lower priced smoked gammon from Aldi is superb (small £4 ish 750g) chuck it in your slow cooker with a couple of rough chopped onions and carrots then fill 3/4 of the way up the meat with cheap cola and put on high for a couple of hours then medium till it's done (about 6-7 hours in total) add a handful of roasties and mixed veg along with white sauce with onions in and that gives us 4 delicious servings.

Not so sure about the scones 😛 , I treat myself to a Cheddar cheese loaf of bread from M + S now and again and that would be ideal with the soup , more so if I warmed it up in the toaster first , I very rarely buy any bread stuff from M + S if it have been reduced as I find after a couple of days it start going mouldy , I would sooner pay full price with a good date on it , this would then last me about four days :drinks:

I forgot to tell you about a minor disaster I had after cooking the Gammon last night , it had to be in the oven for 35 minutes on 200 , so to allow the oven to warm up I set the timer for 40 minutes , so far so good , after 25 minutes you had to drain the juice off and then stick it back in the oven for the remaining time , I took the shank out of the cooking dish and emptied the juice down the sink , today after I washed the plates ect I them emptied the bowl of water down the sink , yes you have guessed right the sink waste was blocked , touch wood I could sort it out and the bends were blocked with congealed fat from the juices I put down the sink the previous night , after I cleaned all the pipes out and tipped a container of sink cleaner it was job well done and I didn't have to call out Essex And Suffolk Water out:lol:

a tool that i use when getting rid of oil and fats ...is buy some cat litter put it in a bowl next to the cooker and pour the un-used hot oil/fats into it before you wash up...it will absorb alot of oil and stuff ...then put it in the bin and start again....

Ooh! Never throw all that goodness away.
