If the Pigeons are getting disturbed every day with the farmer going past and putting them off and then with him seeing some back on so out come the scarecrows how on earth do they expect you to shoot any serious numbers , do he want you as a full time unpaid bird scare'r for the privilege of letting you shoot ( his ) pigeons :hmm:.    MM

Because if you listen to some a bird scarer does not put the pigeons off. :)

Got it WRONG today! The farmer had put out scarecrows which didn't help. Pigeons had been hitting the field for nearly a week. A couple of huge flocks turned up and dropped straight onto the crop, nearer his scarecrows than my decoy pattern. They never looked at, or maybe never saw, my decoys. A shot put them off forever. A few passing birds had a little look and I shot 8 in 3 hours.

Not what I had hoped for but that's life.

I'm sure the pattern in the article would not have helped, I had the wrong field or the right field on the wrong day or something. There was no traffic worth speaking of

My minimal pattern (carried several 100 yards over sticky Essex clay) sort of worked again yesterday. Just a magnet and 5 full-bodied decoys. Loads in the trees waiting to feed when I arrived at 8.00am. They left, en masse and when they came back in big groups and didn't see any birds in the trees or on the crop, just kept going without a glance at the field.

Small groups, singles and pairs were not so lucky. Some were clearly magnet aware and flared away well out but I picked up another 21 which didn't.

So that's 70+ in 3 outings on winter rape, which I am quite pleased with.

Day 4 today.

He's doing well.

Dead round here but there's very little rape for them anyway this year after the last two years ripping it up and redrilling spring barley after heavy rain and flea beatle its not financially viable.

Have you tried just a flapper and a few decoys ??.

Works for me i rarely use a magnet except on laid wheat/barley.

Hello, There has not been much chance on Pigeons around the Vale this last few years due to low numbers and they do not settle to one field, so i gave away my magnet and just use 2 bouncers and a dozen decoys when i get chance of shooting

Going to be the same round here the smaller farms are turning to SFI to guarantee an income less financial risk.

Magnets have there place but over use has made them useless most days.

Well my magnet and a few decoys worked quite well again today. With the help of a Pigeon Watch member, who came to help me out, we accounted for nearly 40 pigeons, over rape. I admit that they are getting well stuck into rape round here, unusually early but with the large areas available to them, I feel I need the magnet to attract their initial attention. Some are magnet shy, no doubt but at  least I'm getting visitors. If it aint broke, don't fix it!

Well done on getting a few, been out today after a text from farmer yesterday saying some numbers on his rape, should have stopped at home, foggy, no wind and pigeons sat in trees not doing much, walked them off and managed to kill 8 in two hours, those that came back decoyed well.

Magnet or not? I would say that 8-9 times out of 10 it will pull pigeons, even if they don't land but just come for a look they are usually shootable, I find its better to have the magnet close in so they don't have to over fly it to get to the killing zone/decoys, to far out seems to spook them.

Well done again.

Nice to have help especially carrying kit and pigeons back.

Regards the magnet long may it work for you. As you say those big fields you have over there it may work as intended.

Yes, this field is an horrible, long, uphill carry, his help was much appreciated! I think he enjoyed knocking a few birds down too!

It's a good job you are doing your bit to keep Talk From The Field alive and kicking , if it got any less reports then we might get a small refund on our subs  , just goes to show what proportion of Pigeon shooters shoot over Winter crops , some of the main bugbears must be , time , game shoots , weather conditions and of course you need Pigeons on your patch , well done and keep up the good work    MM  :good:

funny you saying that about “pigeon shooters and winter crops” just this week I was talking to a farmer and he asked me what as happened to all the pigeon shooters, he said years ago he would get regular knocks on the door asking if they could shoot a few pigeons on his rape, in the last 5 or so years the only people to knock his door were a couple of lads wanting to shoot some on the stubbles, strangely enough I cant remember the last time I bumped into another pigeon shooter during the winter.

Glad you appreciate my efforts. That's why I get a bit prickly when people don't appreciate that I'm just trying to stimulate debate. I liked the chess puns the other week though!

Resting up for a few days now, to let the pigeons settle down, might go out with my mate Rick Onissance though.

Cheers!

I've just been out with him.

Hope you have better luck with him .

Yes, I spend a lot of time out with Rick, chasing Essex birds. Fortunately, my "better half" is very understanding! Today, Rick and I have spotted a couple of flocks, which will need my attention in the next few days, but there is a game shoot nearby soon (Monday) so I'll have to wait until that's happened, to avoid upsetting anyone.

I must admit, I do tend to concentrate on work during the winter as I run my own business and take lots of afternoons off for the 6 months of the year when pigeons are in more plentiful supply.
To be honest they disappear here largely during the winter months anyway now, so an odd day here and there if they do appear on rape is all I can usually manage anyway regardless of time.
I really miss the lack of shooting during the winter, but usually get a few good afternoons flighting them to roost when the conditions are right!

You know there is a fine line in a bit of banter and taking the pxxx , the latter have never been and never will be my intention and that go for the majority who follow you and other Pigeon shooters on the forum , we like a little laugh now and again and maybe after you spending a long day going around your countryside in search of a days sport to no avail you might not always see the funny side .

We all know how much work go into getting a half tidy bag on rape and people like myself are now getting towards the sell by date , I can no longer stick the cold on a Winters day trying to get a few Pigeons that I no longer have any need for , yesterday I spent the whole day ( 10am till 9.45 ) in the Norfolk / Norwich Hospital having two stents put in my arteries so at the moment apart from some gentle exercise my days of lugging any amount of gear over a sticky wet field is just a pipe dream and will be left to those who do fancy it .

So keep up the good work and think up another game we can compare your exploits with
