sandspider
Hi folks My faithful but ancient Tag 2000 needs a service and some repairs to bezel etc., and it's looking like costing at least 3 or 4 hundred pounds, so toying with the idea of a new watch instead. I like a smallish watch, two tone steel and gold for preference, and automatic. Hence the Tag. I found Steinhart, e.g. https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/diver-watch/diver-watch-39mm/ocean-39-gmt-2-two-tone-chocolate.html which is supposed to be a pretty good clone of a Submariner but at a much lower cost. Has anyone had one of these, and would you recommend Steinhart? Or other brands I could look at? Thank you.
welsh1
Take a look at a custom made seiko, half the price, good reliability and a pretty unique watch here are a couple of sites, i do like Mister Khronan. https://misterkhronan.com/store/ https://www.watchmodcustom.com/7-shop
sandspider
Budget up to £1000 maybe? £500 better if possible... Everyday wear so something that can take the odd knock. I'd consider secondhand, but wouldn't be able to tell a fake from a genuine! Will look at the custom Seikos, thanks.
CaptC
Casio Marlin Duro - £80 ish, resistant to 20 bar, excellent time keepers and they look the part.
amateur
I've had a Casio Waveceptor for years. Self-charging, self adjusting and as tough as old boots.
sandspider
I like automatic / mechanical over radio controlled... but I'll look at them anyway! 😁
sandspider
I hadn't, I'm not military. Will look at it though, thanks

Munzy
I’ve got a couple of Steinharts in the watch box, they’ve very nicely made. I had the Ocean One when it first came out but sold it as it was too much like a Submariner and I loved it so much I found a great deal on a second hand one! I still have the Ocean One Vintage which is also nice on an old brown leather strap and the Ocean One Vintage Chrono which is inspired by the Paul Newman Daytona. You won’t be disappointed with the quality with a Steinhart.
sandspider
Thanks folks. I'm open to suggestions, but still leaning towards a 2 tone steel / gold automatic watch with a metal strap. I'd like a date window, and not a chronograph. I'll keep looking. Good to know the Steinharts are well made if that is the eventual choice 👍
sandspider
Anyone used watchmodcustom.com? Only one review and it's not great - but the site looks slick and the prices are keen. Or moddys-watches.com? Better reviews and still quite good prices.

Captain Caveman
I have a Precista, which is a solid watch with a Swiss movement.
timd999
Not a watch expert, but have had one of these for the last 5yrs. Worn every day. Keeps good time and seems bombproof. Various colours to choose from. https://www.hamiltonwatch.com/en-gb/h82365141-khaki-navy-auto.html
