marsh man
Either I got it right or I was hungry as I left just a little for my four legged friend , had the duck breast in the slow cooker all the afternoon and done the veg for 20 minutes tonight , I still had a piece of the stuffing log so I added a couple of slices of that , the gravy was lovely and I again used the water from the steamer , I didn't do the Apple pie as I still had two small M + S fruit trifle's left so I had one of them , the duck look well done but it was just right as I browned it off and left the skin on , overall it was a nice tea. Will the sprouts last till next Christmas? Funny you asked that T C , I used the last sprout tonight , the last parsnip , the last two carrots and got one bit of caulie left , what made it slightly better was the duck was the last one I shot , I hope to get at least one more Mallard , this will be the first one in 2025 , at the moment the water on my marshes are frozen over , it should get milder next week and I will do my best to shoot at least one more . I done the duck breast how you suggested , I was going to do it the other way round but I stuck it in the frying pan dinnertime with a cut up onion , turned it over a couple of times and then put all the contents in the slow cooker with some carrots and the half bottle of the Pear cider , you have to make mistakes so you can then get it right the next time . JohnfromUK
Looks nice and a good sized plateful - including plenty of good healthy veggies. Sprouts, carrots and cauli are my 'go-to' at this time of year - plus cabbage, leeks and mashed swede as other variations.

You are doing well - the meals you picture are good meals, and also varied and healthy. You also get enjoyment from it - which is also good because there's nothing like enjoying the things that some might see as just daily chores. Keep up the good work. Like you, I also use M&S and one thing I now do is make my own food based (loosely) on things I have had from M&S (and others). I usually start by 'Googling' for a recipe 'on-line', assess whether it is in my capabilities, and proceed from there. It is also worth noting that things like Jusroll (ready made pastry from supermarkets) are great ways to make pies, pasties etc. without having to make pastry. Pies freeze really well. Aled
Nice post Marsh Man. During my 7 years of bachelordom, i cooked my own food, and was very keen on stews, casseroles, etc, now on Monday was my stay at home night so i would batch cook Spag Boll, Chicken Casserole, Curry, Beef stew etc, then i ate one on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday was rugby training night, so i had a meal ready in the fridge for when i came back, Weds i would make something like Bangers n Mash and veg, or Pork chop mash n veg, Friday was takeaway night, Saturday was match day so the rugby club fed me, and Sunday was nurse a hangover day and eat Beans on Toast when hungry! Then got married and found out I'd been cooking food incorrectly for 7 years, although it always tasted good for me. Not sure if i miss those days or not.... When I got married in the last century, the Lady was a very unconfident cook, but give her credit, she did learn quickly and is now a very competent cook. It THANKS to people like your yourselves that have made the cooking journey into the unknown interesting to say the least , I am not short of exercise and fresh air and I do need to eat reasonably well to try and maintain that but at the moment I only want to dedicate a certain amount of time , this is where the slow cooker come in handy as I now realise that most things don't need 8 to 12 hours cooking time , I can now put the slow cooker on low just before I go out in the afternoons and most of the meals are more than ready for when I get home around tea time , the early evenings are still dark so I can get ready any extras well in time before I have my tea around 7 / 7.30pm , I also like to vary what I eat as well , apart from a fairly small Morrisons the M + S food shop is the next nearest one to me and with it being on the retail park I can do other shopping at the same time , I am often in M + S when they are reducing items and I have come to know a lot of the friendly staff who often keep me informed of anything they have just reduced , very often I will buy a weeks supply of stuff and then give it a miss unless I see a bargain , just recently they have reduced the Christmas cakes and drinks to next to nothing , I have now got enough fruit cake and other Christmas goodies to last me till this Christmas so if any of you good guys are coming past at any time you can have a nice cup of tea and a slice of iced fruit cake to go with it even if it's at the height of the Summer .😁 Note my new teeth emoji .
