I got that bit, but I disagree that shooting smaller bags would result in less antis.

I’m sure it would ,I’m not talking about committed anti fieldsports activists I’m talking about individuals that see us in the context we create. Entitled followers of the excessive bag mentality on shoots where some drives can see shots per bird as high as 10 to 1 can influence the non committed to see our sport as distasteful. In rural areas many people brought up with small scale shooting see it as part of their culture, large commercial shoots are liable not to be seen in the same way by some of those same people.

This absolutely. I listened to a drive on a Commercial shoot last season and was sickened by the number of shots, it was a slaughter on a grand scale.  I have been a member of 3 small shoots for 30 years but recently gave up my SGC / FAC.  The farm I Pigeon shot on for years had a Commercial shoot on it and hated it.

I used to be in a (with a very formal dress code all bespoke tweed non of your off the peg John Norris catalogue gear) syndicate

I wonder how much of your own charm, style, and personality was muted due to having to fit into that group?

That is not a slur on you, but I mean that formal environments often stifle people's own self. Fair play on the farmers for exactly what they did!

Oh no we gave as good as we got. We were all Leicestershire men. It was just that we all had this "thing" about not wanting to look like male models from the John Norris catalogue on a photoshoot. We shot with all side by side guns but that ranged from Purdey through to one with a cheap old Birmingham hammer gun.

Interesting that the new Scottish Natural Environment Bill is proposing mandatory training for deer culling and BASC are opposing it

They are also opposing further restrictions on lead shot use but that is not always reflected in practice apparently.
Nevertheless if they do in fact oppose mandatory training and continue to offer affordable accessible training to supply a need then that’s of benefit to the shooting community and should be applauded. Ideally the cost of any such training should be minimised and ideally covered in one day to avoid the expense of overnight stays which may make those opportunities not viable for those living further afield.

The Game Shooter Certificate.

Sounds like another BASC Trojan Horse.

BASC aims to promote and protect shooting activities by establishing and maintaining high standards through education, training and best practice.

BASC supports industry-led voluntary training and is opposed to the introduction of mandatory competence testing for any form of shooting.

However, people who are new to the sport must accept that the onus is on them to develop the knowledge and skill to use a shotgun or firearm safely.

We offer a range of courses to help you demonstrate you have the knowledge and know-how to use firearms or shotguns confidently and safely, in a field-based situation.

https://basc.org.uk/training/

As regards the proposals to introduce mandatory training for all deer stalkers in Scotland, BASC is the only organisation actively opposing this requirement, as there is no evidence to justify it.

https://basc.org.uk/why-the-scottish-natural-environment-bill-must-be-fixed/

As such, rather than comments about 'Trojan Horses' perhaps get behind BASC, if you are not already a member.
