Oly
http://www.castingforrecovery.org.uk/ Great FREE outdoor respite for breast cancer recoverers ...but only for women (yes men can get it too chaps)!!! What happened to discrimination?!? :o Run for life is another one...why women only?!?! Nearly the same numbers of women get breast cancer as men get prostate cancer, but only 1 in 8 breast cancer women die after diagonsis - 1 in 3 prostate cancer men die after diagonsis. Women get regular screening from an early age and are therefore more comfortable seeking help and talking about medical issues...blokes don't...surely that's worthwhile offering separate retreats for both sexes!?! Women's cancer seems to get more hype because they are more vunerable and men just put and and shut up - but it's wrong, it's discrimination and it drives me up the wall!! Or am I being short-sighted?!?
al4x
you're being short sighted IMHO, I'm sure there are other schemes for men that don't invite women along
Jonsey
To be fair I don’t think they are ignoring the fact that boys can get cancer too. I think women are more likely to chat about having cancer and are more likely to seek out other ladies with the same thing than men. I certainly don’t think they expect you to put up and shut up, no one would. Cancer in men has not been talked about enough I agree, but I don’t think an attack on these folks is justified. There must be organisations for men with Prostrate and Breast Cancer it’s just not as widely advertised as these things for women. There’s nothing wrong surely with an all ladies activity bringing people together that can share experiences and help others cope. Women talk more that’s all, surely you agree with that, I think that’s why all these things get more media coverage. We do love a good old chat, nothing stops us except maybe chocolate cake. Just to set the record straight, we don’t get regular screening from being young unless a direct blood relative has died of breast cancer, so that’s Mother, Grandmother, Aunts and siblings. I would imagine it’s the same for men. If your Grandfather and Father died you’d be screened now as a matter of course. It’s up to us to screen ourselves and look out for lumps until we get to 50 when the mammogram gets automatically added to your MOT Certificate.

Oly
Everything you seem to hear about though is support/awareness for women - and that ends up being where all the money is spent as they shout the loudest, but you just hear nothing for men! Sorry Jonsey - I was talking about screening in terms of not only breast, but also cervical. Mung - good to see your up to your usual standard of quality reply at present! Or is that in response to my last jibe http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...c=45993&hl=
LEFTY478
Women aren't allowed in the Golf Club's bar and men can't go to coffee morning at the breast awareness centre. Fair exchange is no robbery, mate.

berettaman1
I am very sad that this kind of topic even has to be discussed on these forums, Speaking as a guy who who has had a dad, and two sisters struck down with this dreadfull disease, and now another member in the family fighting it ( Whats the point I ask myself?) I still would ask another question,! Why is drugs to fight this disease easily available to sufferers in Scotland on the NHS, when they are denied to fellow sufferers in England??.THIS CRAPPY NEW LABOUR GOVERMENT IS ONLY TOO HAPPY TO SPEND MANY MANY MILLIONS , TO PROP UP BAD THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES WHO TREAT THEIR PEOPLE LIKE ****P and yet treat English people like Scum.!! Guest The Outlaw
I think the problem with mens cancer and men is that we dont talk about it openly or enough between us. There was a campaign some time ago by a Premiership footballer trying to help with a prostate or testicular cancer awareness program but I havent heard of one since. We are supposed to check our bits and pieces regularly, but who does. Not being smutty but it is probably best if your partners check for you as they are more aware of things and we are more likley to shrug a potential problem off. The other thing that is also a problem IMO is going to see a doctor about soething you may have found. I dont want a male doctor checking my bits out, so I would see a female doctor instead. I know from experience that you behave yourself when you are being examined down there so why not, they have seen it all before. Ican only speak of examination of the front bits because I had a Vasectomy and am now a Jaffa. The back door is where I think they check your Prostate from and I dont like the idea of that as it is a one way street. Tony

Pushkin
BM1 - how you doing pal? Rest assured all of Scotland doesNOT get automatic access to these drugs - it still seems to depend on the post code lottery - yet again I'm with you as regards the need to make these medicines available to all UK citizens. Sorry to hear about your families troubles with this scourge; my family has been through similar - and its not easy. Do they not have WELLMAN clinics south of the border? They started these in some parts of Scotland a while back - same idea as the WELLWOMAN clinics. I thought they were a good idea but I can honestly say, I never heard anyone say they had been to one For all those who aren't too sure what and where you are meant to check on the dangly bits - here is a good link (don't click if you are offended by male body parts). http://www.nursing-standard.co.uk/archives...pdfs/p48-51.pdf Pushkin

I have no problem with women getting the limelight as they are responsible, mainly, for getting us on this plane, bringing us up, and most importantlyof all putting up with us. BTW, Mungler and co have put light on it in the true tradition of PW and that's how we handle things here. IMHO. This is isn't a sarcy post and I hope you don't read it as one mate. al4x
oly the bit you are missing is that this organisation was set up as follows:- Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland is a non-profit, support and educational program for women who have or have had breast cancer. It is not for men with testicular cancer or any other cancer go to google and you will find other organisations set up to support men with cancer. Its just simply set up so women who have had the same disease can talk to each other about it and take part in something together. As far as the postcode lottery for drugs well its a tricky one when some of these drugs can cast up to 12K a month and have a low chance of keeping the sufferer alive then it is a very difficult decision to make. But also when it is the only faint glimmer of hope to the sufferer and their family then its also a very hard decision.
