I was out Fallow stalking in Wiltshire yesterday morning.

There was a strong wind blowing into my face as I sat and waited, It was'nt long before the first deer was heading my way, a sorel, he was with a pricket about 130yds out, he stopped for a few seconds and I squeezed the trigger.

As the sorrel went over the pricket ran on about 30 yds then turned and ran back towards me, it was as if he could'nt work out where the noise had come from, he offered a shot as he was heading into some thick gorse.

I shot the doe and then the fawn within seconds of each other, then we called it a day,

nice shooting,

We need someone to get stuck into them round here, I sat and counted a herd yesterday 88 head but they all seem to stick to one farmers land who won't allow shooting. Its not a good thing as its a pretty populated area with too many roads for that number of deer.

Nice report and good pics. :birthday:

I have never heard the term Sorrell and wondered what that means???

SS :birthday:

Miffy is spot on!

A male fallow deer is called a fawn in his first year; a pricket in his second; a sorel in his third; a sore in his fourth; a buck of the first head in his fifth and a great buck in his sixth.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well done, congratulations. i myself am going to Lincolnshire for fallow deer and muntjac in three weeks. Hopefully i will get one :good: .

In my country and probably mostly the rest of europe we classify them as:

pricket = spitser (or spiesser)

sorel = knieper

sore = loffler

buck 5th = half schauffler

buck older = schauffler

It's names are from the german language, now you know what to call them in case any of you guys shoot a german/mainland one.... :P

Thanks H&H,

Interesting to hear that.

I wish you luck for your trip to Lincolnshire, and look forward to hearing about it.
